I am looking at building a home server around the ASRock W790 WS paired with an Intel Xeon W5-2555X.
Looking around online for local stores (Australia) the cheapest I can find is the Micron 64GB DDR5-5600 RDIMM 2Rx4 CL46 for $460 AUD.
My question is does/should server memory be purchased in kits? I am having trouble trying to find kits other than on newegg and it is a lot cheaper to buy multiple sticks of RAM vs buying a kit.
Second question is will there be any problems if I was to purchase only 2 or 4 sticks or do I need to populate all slots?
Read the manual it will probably allow you to have less, but really should populate 1/2 the slots to leave less bandwidth on the table.
If you are going workstation style board you should consider ordering off QVL, you can probably get away without that but sometimes boards are picky. If you have a good return policy give whatever is at hand a chance.

Good idea, I had a look and the MTC40F2046S1RC56BR is not on the QVL but MTC40F2046S1RC56BD1 QLFF is. They appear to have similar specs so hopefully would work.

Looks like 2 slots is supported well. I will see what the price of RAM comes to and see if I can go 4 sticks.
