Ram issues (Installed 4GB only using 1.96GB)

So my PC has been rather slow recently. So I checked out my system via windows and noticed it was only using 1.96GB instead of 4GB. I've been on my msconfig and turned off the maximum memory to see if that would work which it didn't. I also tried putting the max memory to 4096 to see if all memory would be enabled then. Still didn't work. So i tried both ways again and noticed that i couldn't change it. Every time I changed a setting and applied it i'd double check and would see that it go back to its old setting therefore it didn't make a different to my system and that's why it wasn't changing the ram I think to 4GB.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense. :/

I'd like to get my system to use all 4GB for games and stuff. Please help :)

Are you using 32-bit wndows? if yes, upgrade to 64-bit. 32-bit version of windows cant use more than 2GB worth of RAM. if you dont want to upgrade yet, try searching for the 2GB bypass for windows 32-bit. it's fairly easy to do. Good luck!

Just a quick correction. 32-bit windows can use up to 3.1GB of mem. It sounds like you might have some ram go bad. Has it always had the 4GB installed or are they new dims?

Edit: Sorry, 32-bit windows will recognize up to 4GB... BUT, not all of it will be addressable. So it should show somewhere in the 3.3-3.5GB of available memory

Doesn't Microsoft reserve more RAM because he has 2 GB of ram on GPU?

Indeed that can happen.

I have no idea why he'd be using a 32 bit OS though.  More info needed.

Sorry i forgot to mention im using a 64-bit system
