RAM incompatibility issue / clock speed

Hey guys,

I have an issue that is somewhat solved already.

I purchased the MSI Z170A Tomahawk AC Mainboard together with a set of Kingston Hyper X 2400MHz HX426C15FBK2/16 Dimms for my new build. (Skylake i5-6600 passively cooled, no GPU)

From the very beginning, I've had the screen go dark randomly for up to two seconds. (gaming, browsing, video, idle)
Sound stayed on, no freezes or BSODs etc. occured, no error messages. Same thing with different screens and cables. Temperatures were fine.

So RAM was the next suspect and I switched slots, to no avail. One Dimm on its own runs just fine though. Memtest doesn't report any errors.

I then noticed that the RAM was not listed on MSI's compatability list.
Trying out different BIOS settings (RAM voltage), I finaly set the clock to 2133 (down from 2400) and have since not had any more issues.

I'm fine with that, don't really need the amount nor clock speed at the moment, but I'm still curious about what causes this kind of issue. I guess I'll keep my eyes peeled for BIOS and board driver updates and try again in a few months.

Any other ideas, insights and hints are more than welcome.

Cheers,
Olli

Well I guess you got unlucky with the RAM lottery. The XMP speeds are not guaranteed to work so may happen, just like in your case, that 2400MHz speed are not stable. You can send them back to who sold them to you and maybe get a new pair of sticks that are present on the QLV of your motherboard and be sure that you'll be able to have a stable XMP profile (not due to the RAM being on the QLV list but because you'll get lucky the second time).
