Ram compatibility

can anyone tell me if i can use workstation/server RAM in a desktop pc

to be more specific SK Hynix HMT31GR7BFR4C 8GB on a Asus M5 A97 R2.0 Motherboard.

with RAM being very expensive in NZ rite now i found this Hynix module very cheap but i am worried about compatibility.

thanks

Short answer:  Yes.

On most consumer (non-ecc) boards, ECC ram will run just fine (assuming all other variables are compatible).  It basically just ignores the error correction and treats it the same as a non-ecc stick.  I've heard reports of this slowing the speed down a bit, but I'm not sure that's true.  Even if it is, I'm sure it's negligable.

However, your board lists ECC as supported, so it may actually utilize the error checking...  So, yeah.  It should work just fine.

i was also worried about the voltage as this is low voltage ram 1.35v but looking at the verified modules on asus.com other low voltage modules are supported.

ECC seems to be supported as well but are you able to elaborate a bit more on registered (buffered) as my motherboard doesnt seem to support it.

If the ram you are looking at is registered, then it will NOT work in your motherboard.  Like I said, ECC will work if all other variables are compatible.  Your MB doesn't support either registered or buffered ram (which, granted are generally the same thing, but not always).  Un-buffered ECC will work fine though.

I apologize, I should have tried to look up the ram you posted rather than giving a canned response.
