Raiding Chinese SSD's

Random ewaste cleanup idea. You know how sometimes, not always, but sometimes you can find rip off SSD’s claiming to be 512 but its agtually like 32 or 64? Those things gost literally nothing, even ho just go on ali I can buy 64g ssd’s for nothing.

What are the odds buying a fuck pile of them and slapping them in raid on an hba or something WON’T break something?

You can buy used enterprise SSD’s for probably the same price as the abomination you’ll create

Even if I could get a 64GB SATA SSD for 1€, I’d still get a new 250GB one for 20€, because the real cost are SATA ports, HBA or expander which aren’t 1€ each.

If you want 30 cheap drives, get USB flash sticks for 2€ a piece and daisy chain USB hubs and make a nice ZFS pool out of them. For…science?

Define nothing? Thing is, let’s count on $10 per 64GB drive. 8 drives in RAIDz2 is 384GB and pretty safe. But it’s also $80 and for that you can get a 500GB Samsung drive, that hopefully won’t break as much.

Might be worth mentioning, my current go-to used drive is the Intel DC S3700’s, usually 800GB ones go for like $80

Write endurance is 10 full drive writes per day, for 5 years. So 14PB of write endurance

I don’t think the chinesium SSD RAID could manage that
