R720 boot problem when added a pci sata expantion

hey all. i got a used r720xd i’m using as a truenas scale box at home.

i got a pcie m.2 expansion card that causes problems when the system boots.
for a long time i thought it was a problem with flashing the h710 mini card. but relised it was the sata card.

right now when the boot ask me to start configuration utility (ctrl c) it boots fine. but no config utility.
anyone know how to fix this? getting old every time i reboot to go hit ctrl c at the right time. also the card works fine and i can use the m.2 ssds in truenas

here is the card i bought

its a avago mpt2 boot rom

i have run into similar issues on a different card with the same jmicron chip.

i never resolved them unfortunately

i had another sata controller that worked without issue so never really dug into it

yeah anyone have a card they recomend? I was thinking about moving to nvme anyway. i really just use them for apps and vms.

lsi hba

LSI 9211-8I

it can be had much cheaper on ebay, but is also available new on amazon. and it requires a pcie slot thats physically x8, but it will run on four lanes electrically

theres nothing else i would feel comfortable recommending. all the sata cards i’ve tried are pretty finicky

if your m.2 slot is keyed for sata flash drives as well, there are some m.2 to 5 (or 6) sata port adapters that shouldnt be too problematic. no specific product to recommend tho

yeah i know the 720 does not suport bifucation so i was thinking a couple single pci to NVME. anyone used those?

you think i should try that on this sata card? it isnt a raid card
