Quiet blower fans for passive GPUs

In the “Cheat Codes for Breaking Device Limits” video (this one), Wendell held up a 3 pin blower fan that he uses to cool V100s, and stated that they were quite quiet. I’ve tried two different blower fans, and this has not been my experience, haha.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a specific model of blower fan that isn’t horribly loud or annoying?

the dell vrtx blower modules are pretty quiet when running <2400rpm

Interesting. Are you referring to these ones?

The Supermicro FAN-0059L4 are quite good, run many 1u servers with a single one of them and they are great

The secret for a quiet fan is a big fan, the blower you want it bot thick and wide so it doesn’t have to spin fast

I think it also has to do with the bearing design and static pressure (design of the fins, I guess?)

I replaced the original fans in my 2u chassis with fans that spin the same speed, but are less than half the noise

Original is FAN-0099L4 which are Nidec and max speed is 6500rpm, and replaced them with FAN-0094L4 which are San Ace with a max speed of 6300rpm. I have the fans turned way down anyway so they never get to the max, but the San Ace fans move SO MUCH more air

Thanks everyone! I’m still interested in additional recommendations, but I did order a supermicro FAN-0059L4 since I found one on ebay. I will report back with comments on how quiet it is, and how cool it keeps the GPU

The FAN-0059L4 arrived and I’m happy to report that at lower PWM settings it is indeed acceptably quiet! I haven’t actually hooked it up to a GPU yet, and will update again when I do.
