Is buying used RAM a good idea?
I know (have read) that mobos and HDDs are not durable and should be bought new. CPUs are something else that can be safely bought new. Anyone else got any experience with used RAM? I’m looking for a couple sticks of ECC DDR4 for a FreeNAS box. Thanks!
yes
Ram has generally been one of the easier ones to buy used.
If it survives shipping fine, I’ve found sticks to generally just last a long time.
The thing that is breaking 9 out of 10 times is moving parts. Hard drives, fans, water pumps, etc.
Even Overclock. If ou OC a CPU or GPU it’s easy to fry those parts. If you OC badly you can kill your board as well. If you OC wrong your ram you most likely just won’t post and would have to revert to default settings.
If your motherboard supports the ram it should be fine.
For used parts ram is probably the safest bet…
(as long as it is packed okay- I’ve seen ram shipped in non-padded envelopes, because heatspreaders make it look bulletproof)
I think these days, if you OC, the mobo dies first instead of the CPU.
yep, seen this too and had to return RAM because of it
I would definitely buy used ram if it is still presentable and not abused by the owner meaning that it is not overclocked or the the timing is not changed
