Quick Question. What is the difference between i3 and i3-gaps

Just curious as I have been seeing the to mentioned in the forum a bit.

i3-gaps has the ability to put user-defined gaps between the windows and i3 does not.

there is also i3-gaps-next which has support for transparencies on certain core i3 components, among other things.
