(quick question) is this an M.2 slot?

i was tinkering with my laptop and noticed this slot, is it an M.2 slot ? :)

if so i can insert an ssd ect. right ? :)

M.2 slot ?

No.

that is M-Sata.

that slot is used for SSDs in ultra-thin Form-factor Notebooks. and Tablets

Just for future reference this article shows the difference between the two.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2

in the future there will be many different M.2 slots as they move away from Msata to M.2 PCIe.  There will be H type slots and single slots ... some now have 4 leads next to the slot and others have 5 leads .  they do this so you can't mess up and plug the wrong one in

It might not even be MSATA. It could just be an ordinary mini-PCIe slot. What laptop do you have?

My money is on msata and not pcie( even though the pin config is identical) because the chip thats taken out looks to have flash chips on it. and msata ssds are more common than pcie based ones

agreed. also M.2 is fairly new so i wouldn't expect it to be on just any regular laptop.

If he has an MSATA SSD, he can try it without any problem. The electrical specification between MSATA and MPCIE is the same, so there's no chance of burning anything out. It just won't be detected by the system if they are not compatible.
