Quick Question - AMD Epyc and DIMM population

Hi,

Was wondering if someone could guide me, I have an AMD Epyc Rome 7302 in one of my boxes, with 256 GB installed in HALF the available DIMM slots. Anyway, I was thinking of upgrading to a Milan 7543 32 Core and was wondering what opinion there is out there regarding if there is a need to populate all my memory DIMM slots for a total of 512 GB? Board is a Gigabyte MZ32-AR0 and OS is Windows 10 Pro for Workstations 64.
Thanks in advance!

What is your workload?
EPYC only support 8 memory channel. If memory bandwidth is a concern, then running 1DPC at 3200 MT/s is better. However, if you need higher capacity, then 2DPC at 2933 MT/s may be required.

Aside from a slight drop in MT/s is the 8 channels being used by 8 DIMMs? AKA one channel per slot and I don’t need to populate the other 8. Stupid question I know.

Yes, but you need to refer to your motherboard manual to see which 8 slots to use.

OK, got it. Thanks for your help and replies! Have a great weekend.
