Just need a quick answer so i can start researching in the right direction. My local energy is laying/blowing fiber through our whole county. We are due next month for them to lay it to our property. The services only option is a 100mbps up/down. Ive spoke to the local CS rep over the phone and they assured me that 100Mbps is enough for whatever. They dont know me lol.
Question is the limiting factor on a fiber line the Receiver/converter. Can i put in a better one? Im noob to fiber but i would like to learn more. Im just stuck at this question. Lucky for me out of the 300 people in my area less than 3 might use more than 20Mbps
With fibre the transceiver and receivers need to operate in the same manner (eg work in the same mode) otherwise neither end will be able to communicate.
As for changing the converter (between say RJ45 and Fibre) there is little point. As if they supply you with something what makes you believe the other end of the communication link will be much better?
ok. How is the bandwidth limited to just 100mbps usually? software or hardware?
I was thinking that their equipment at the hub would be something like 1 or 10gps total capable and that the limiting factor would be the equipment they gave me.
The possibility of getting higher speeds depends on the network layout. If it's a dedicated fiber line between your house and their central office, then it is possible for them to just upgrade your equipment on both ends (assuming they were willing to allow that). This is not likely to be the case as it is very expensive to deploy that kind of system. If this is a residential deployment, it's most likely a PON-type layout where many subscribers share a single transceiver at the ISP's central office and a portion of the total distance of the fiber. If that main transceiver isn't already capable of gigabit speeds to individual subscribers, you're probably out of luck. Those would be much more expensive to upgrade because then they would have to upgrade everyone to hardware that would be capable of those faster speeds.
pretty much the fiber itself has massivve near limitless throughput BUT the bottleneck will be the hardware on THEIR side AND YOUR side
in the future, all they need to do is swap out the 2 boxes on the ends of the fiber
talk to someone a little higher up. i just moved to a new place and they tried to stick me on 6 megabit i went higher up and talked to brodude and now have a custom plan for 10 meg ,and 2 separate connections that ive bonded into one single 20 meg line
our issue here is that the guy claims that the entire node of the cmts is like limited in my block to some shit level like 50meg or something PS: like a half mile, to a mile away there is a small fiber network..... i had to land in the home in the shit internet side of town...
Like you guys said ill just talk to someone higher up and see if i can get something in between commercial and residential . or some better answers on equipment.
Also i see where it talked about Enterprise but no info is given. Maybe ill call as a business next time. Its hard cause my Swedish sucks and my wife doesn't understand any network terminology. lol
My wife works from home as a translator for video media and i can use her as a excuse for getting a commercial line. She has to download videos all the time, 4g works but not great with a couple computers running.
In the future i want to get into some ECO Heating/mini server farm, thus the reason for a better Up/down speeds.
After looking at the fiber map is see that im about 50m away from the town hub where it will be blown into from the city!
For price comparision they are charging 40 bucks/ 350sek for the 100mbit service with no data caps that i can see. Seems cheap?
This could be limited many ways. They might just give you a cheapo media converter at your house that only capable of 100. all though the fiber might be limited on the far side too. I think 1g transceivers are probably cheaper then some strange 100m just because they are used more. They could also be limiting at the head office with some router/traffic shaper. If you don't get info from them and they install the 100meg service. check the media converter model. its probably just a 100 box, and you could probably just buy a 1000 one online. These devices are normally not managed and don't have MAC address or any other tell tell info from the remote side.
im hoping for that situation... I doubt they have any traffic shaping. They tend not to mess with traffic in Sweden. Unlike comcast ect.
This is from their website.
Vaggeryds Energy offers a fast broadband connection via optical fiber. You will be able to surf up to 100 Mb / s in both directions. How it works A thin tube (5 mm) are drawn into the property. In this tube we blow up two loose fiber. On the wall indoors sitting there a converter that converts light into the fiber to electrical signals for a common data socket (RJ45). All you need is a network card in your computer. Prices: Fiber connection villa Monthly fee: SEK 350 incl. VAT Connection: 2490kr incl. VAT
ok went to a neighborhood meeting with the energy guys...
Info known node is least 10gbs or higher. Their is two commercial accounts on it already but he didnt really specify what speeds. He kept insisting on 100mbs is enough.
says auto sense 100Mb 1000Mb ? also i think their is remote QOS on it.
Asked about running server (reason for getting commercial line) terms and services said the res line servers arnt aloud. He said well we dont monitor and dont really care to much.*said laughingly. lol
Any reason why the service cant go higher than 100Mbs how does the auto sense work?
