Question about Tyan s8030 - getting started

Hi,

I built a server using the Tyan s8030 board. I am having trouble getting started and setting my machine for AI-Deep Learning work I have planned.

The server has an epyc milan CPU + 2 GPUs (rtx 3090). Everything is watercooled. I have a monitor with HDMI hooked up to the GPU. My questions are:

  • do I absolutely need a vga monitor to get started (acces bios, get BMC ip address, setup OS, etc.)?
  • I tried scanning my network for the BMC - no success. I also tried the router interface to find the BMC ip, no success although I could see my laptop and android phone there.

What would be the best way to resolve this? I don’t mind getting a vga monitor if needed. I was thinking of possibly bypassing the VGA output and BMC if necessary to at least get started. I understand that I may need a BIOS & BMC firmware update, just having trouble getting started.

Thank you in advance for your help.

made progress with the build.

-managed to find BMC and login. updated BMC firmware and BIOS to latest from Tyan.
-Installed Ubuntu18. HDMI not working still.

  • installed win10pro, runs fine, hdmi and ipmi both working together. I installed Nvidia drivers and some basic utilities.

NEW QUESTION:
-hwinfo64 showing too high CPU (tctl/tdie) temps (80s to 90s). cores are in the 30s and both my 3090s are also chilling in 20s. HWingo64 also showing some mainboard temps at -700 !!
-ipmi sensors show same CPU (tdie) temp comfortable in the 30s.

I am assuming I should trust the IPMI sensors as opposed to HWinfo64. Am I right to do so?

  • the ipmi
