Hey everyone, I have a couple of questions abour RAID.
I am in the process of aquiring components for my new mini-itx rig. Before I go on, the BASIC setup will be an SSD for OS (and a few programs) and HDD for everything else.
Okay so my question regarding raid is:
Should I do an SSD RAID0 and put more stuff on the larger SSD partition?
or
Should I do an HDD RAID0 and put less on the smaller SSD partition?
or
Just don't bother with raid...
At first I was thinking of getting two 128gb SSDs and putting them in RAID0, but I have been reading that it might not be worth the trouble to put SSDs in raid. Then I was thinking of getting 2 1TB (or smaller?) 7200rpm HDDs and putting them in raid for the speed boost for programs.
I would love to hear about everyone experiences with their own RAID setups.
If you do anything raid the HDD, SSDs will slow down with time in raid0 and they are so blazing fast anyway the gain really won't be something you can notice in the majority of uses. I run a raid0 HDD setup for my games and it makes a difference for sure but honestly I would say your money would best be spent on getting a larger 256gb SSD (they are also faster than the 128 counterparts). Onboard raid also means longer startup times as your bios needs to load the RAID and if your mobo is trash like mine it can double the time in bios.
Thanks for the reply. I will probably just start of without raid and decide later if I want to give it a go. I was looking at SSDs and noticed that the Intel 520 240GB is on sale somewhat. Do you think it is worth snagging or are there better deals to be had? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167086
