I have a problem with the motherboard ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI. Once assembled, everything worked fine for about 20 hours. Then suddenly after moving the graphics card it stopped booting. It remains to hang on code 01 and DRAM led. When booting, it goes through many codes, but many of them point to a normal boot, but after about 10 seconds it stays on code 01. The CPU cooler is warm.
Long enough visible codes are: 00 - 14 - 15 - CC - C0 - 92 - C2 - C8 - 01
Description of code 01 from manual: Power on. Reset type detection (soft/hard).
CPU is Threadripper Pro 3975WX.
RAM is 8x M393A2G40D80-CPB.
The RAM are known good, I tried it with one stick in every slot and also with another set. Without RAM it hangs on 27, which seems to be normal.
The PSU is fine, I tried another one.
No damage is visible on the MB.
The CPU is tightened with the correct torque wrench. Socket looks OK too.
When booting, no storage is connected, no expension card, no VGA card. BMC shows nothing in the logs. There are no shorts on PSU connector on any voltage rails.
I’ve never seen this strange code in mid-boot. Has anyone encountered this before?
I have not encountered that before but, me personally, I would go back to a single stick of RAM and reseat the processor. Then add the GPU and verify the boot works. Then add back the memory DIMM by DIMM so you see where the issue lies. After reseating the processor an adding the first stick of RAM I would do a reboot each time to verify it still boots correctly.
Do you have the supplemental pcie power at the bottom of the board as well as the others? Others have reported strange boot issues if all the power connections are used.
I tried all power connections, but on bench now, I have only required 24-pin, 2x8-pin CPU and 8-pin PCIe. With this combination it worked perfectly before.
Normally without PCIe power it wont boot, but it partially posts and shows fatal error message on screen.
I have reseated CPU twice without any change. Next week I will have a second CPU, so I will make a choice to what will go to RMA first.
GPU in the same slot , or no gpu or a different one?
Was it a high wattage card?
I fumbled my reply ( no coffee ) , having the pcie power in spots E and F ,the 6 pin pcie_pwr_1 and 2 can make for a more reliable system. Even without a high draw gpu or add on card.
Build has GPU RTX 2080 Ti 250W (2x8-pin PCIe). PSU is Seasonic Prime 800W, which should be which should be sufficient for bith CPU and GPU. I tried even bigger PSU without any change.
It worked well for 20 hours even with Furmark without any instability. Now it stops on 01 code with GPU in any slot or without it.
I still can’t understand what the code 01 actually means and why it stops there.
In any case, I will update here when I find out something new.
The motherboard is confirmed to be faulty. The processor works correctly on another board, while a different processor fails to function on this damaged motherboard. I am proceeding with an RMA request.
