Putting electrical tape on a GPU?

I’m sorry if there is a stupid answer to this question, but I don’t like how bright the “has power” LED on my GPU is, especially at night. I want to suppress that by putting electrical tape on the LED; is that a good idea or is there a better solution?

Yes, I have been turning off the power supply every night for 2.5 years, don’t want to keep doing that.

Edit: Asus Strix R9 380 4GB, has a back plate.

Depending uppn the GPU, you may be able to turn the light off in software. Most Nvidia GPUs with a light can be switched off in GeForce Experience. Not sure on AMD, no experience here.

Electrical tape shouldn’t be a problem unless it is covering heat sink fins, or fans/vents.

It is non conductive.

You might also be able to just unplug the light. Bit more elegant but takes a bit more time

Duct Tape might be better. As long as the glue on the tape can handle GPU heat and not fall off. But dont put the glue on the PCB .

Unfortunately the LED is embedded in the PCB, with no reachable wires to cut or unplug.

Hmm maybe careful liquid paper just on the led. It should dry and not melt. This off the top of my head but.

I would test with a led and battery first. heat it with a hair dryer

It sucks when they do that :frowning:

electrical tape will be fine but will leave a residue after a little while.

try a sharpie first

Was going to suggest that, but tape is easier to remove later.

I had to do this for an older Sapphire card. Electrical tape works fine. Non conductive and non damaging. Any residue left behind when you remove it can be taken care of with some rubbing alcohol.

Did to both of my 970 cards and it fine.
