Putting DDWRT on my Linksys Wireless-N Broadband R

Recently the wireless on my router has been failing, I unplugged for a
few secs, plugged back in fixed it for a few, rebooted, fixed it for a
few, then upgraded the firmware, well I am sure you got it. Then 2 days
later it went out again repeated all but the upgrade, no newer versions
anymore. Anyway it wireless failed 5 times in two days. I am hoping
this will fix it once & fore all, plus I hear it is better than the
company firmware, so just wanting some instructions, never did anything
like this before.

Don't be discouraged by the title, it's got good directions in it. Step by step.

^ this. if you have any more problems email qain. hes a bamf with the routers.

Just a question, i'm thinking of getting this router (although OP has deterred me a little bit). I looked on the DDWRT download page for the V3 WRT160N and noticed the absence of a killer, does that mean i can just flash it using the DDWRT firmware without having to go through any of that crap?

It probably means there's no need for a killer, though Qain would know more.

alright thanks, i'll double check with him just to be sure.

Tomato ftw

Qain told me, just flash it like a normal flash (no 30/30/30 BS)Â Here is what a email from qain said

It looks like you may have one of the easier ones to flash.

You will want to use IE <-- if it wasn't a requirement I wouldn't use it.

bounce to your router's firmware update page, and upload:Â http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/Linksys/WRT160N/3.0/dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini_wrt160nv3.bin/2294

from what I can tell, that firmware is needed for the initial swap.

THEN

once that is complete and you have DD-WRT on the router.

Upload this one:Â http://www.dd-wrt.com/routerdb/de/download/Linksys/WRT160N/3.0/dd-wrt.v24-13309_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini.bin/2295

The instructions on the DDWRT site freaked me out to, but you don't need them. Sorry that I deterred you.

WOOT! Definitely picking one up this sunday, thanks to you and Qain this looks like quite a promising buy!

Been using for a few days, it is working great.

im using dd-wrt on my wrt54GS... i love all the customization it gives you. i found a guide that was for my router on the ddwrt website.... i suggest finding one for yours, usually general directions leave out a few steps. i didnt go through the thing in the router page.... when i did mine it was through command prompt, i dont remember how exactly.... but definitely find a guide.

haha dude i've got the same router with DDWRT on it, i'm buying the WRT160N just for the second modem I'm setting up really soon. I remember flashing it, it was a pain in the asssssss >:( I uses a tftp client with a GUI, it took me like two hours to figure everything out and get that router working again xD

I read some review about the wireless going out on the WRT160Nv3 (not caused by DDWRT it is a hardware prob.) anyway I have DDWRT on mine & it is still going out. Edit: Maybe a USB wireless card issue.

oh, i was just going to ask about that, if i had to RMA this router, could i reflash it with the stock FW? Also, i just got it today but the modem's coming in tomorrow, no chance to test quite yet :\ I've got the version 3 too.

Yes, I would say you can reflash it, they wouldn't know. I am thinking it was a screwed up USB wireless card. This is a hick little town, no hotspots here, so no other wireless sources to try. Just happened to have a unused USB wireless card to switch with & the wireless connected again after the other got plugged in.

LOL nice :P I thought my router was fucked with the wireless too, but i changed the channel and MTU size and that fixed it, I also realized that my brother (who was bitching to me about the lag problems) had his windows firewall on -.-

The odd thing about the wireless dropping, is it comes back after a power off/on (only lasts a few hours to a day, before dropping again). I am thinking it is a heat issue, the bottom did feel warm. This room gets sucky ventilation anyway. It is in the low 30s outside & my legs get wet when crossed, anyway, this is a hick tiny town, so I am prob. the only one with wireless here. It is the oppisite of Beverly hillbillies, It is more a non hillbillie in the middle of many hillbillies. I have my wireless on auto. BTW, what did you change your MTU to? Well MTU is set to auto also, so that should be good.
