I'm currently looking at a few builds. It's just coming down to "Do I want to spend the bit of extra money for the 'futureproof' of a 6700K build or by the time I need to replace either of these builds will I have to upgrade pretty much everything anyways and just save myself the few hundred bucks with a 4790K"
EITHER WAY... This isn't REALLY about my build, but where do you guys like to purchase your parts? I see there are plenty of 3rd party vendors. Should I just go to each manufacturers' website and purchase them directly or is the customer service through these other people pretty solid that I can use the convenience of getting all (or at least most) of my parts from the same 3rd party vendor?
Otherwise you could save 200 bucks and get relatively the same performance with a 60hz display, paying extra for the unlocked parts isn't worth it, and if you really need performance you'll want to go X99
I haven't chosen a display yet. I don't do any recording or editing so I had just planned to choose a display based off of whatever build I decided on.
you could either get a 21:9 1080p free-sync display, or a 1440p IPS display for around $250-300
or since your budget is high, just spring for the 4k IPS Free-sync display, just under $500 and never have to buy another display again, although 32" and higher for 4k is better for productivity
I saw some 4k's when I was looking around, but wouldn't having a 4k be tougher on my graphics and almost require me to have a stronger graphics card or two slightly weaker ones to run high end games?
Not really, you can run games at lower settings 4k with a 390, or just run them at 1080p higher settings for more AAA games that aren't going to run well at 4k.
yeah... this is why I went 1440p I like to max my settings out and go into the ini file and increase draw distance when possible. 4k might be the future but 1440p is the current sweet spot.
I personally have used Amazon, B&H, NCIX US, NewEgg, and SuperBiz. Never had any issues but never had to return anything. If you are a Prime member is nice to get things in 2 days.
I run a 4790k system that I built in Jan '15 and wouldn't hesitate to do it again. I've been following all the Z170 motherboards and most cut down there USB type A ports to add 3.1 and Type-C connectors which won't be common for years to come. I have all 8 of my USB connections used on my motherboards I/O. I haven't seen any 8 USB type A connections on a Z170 board.
Also stick with 1440 monitors. 4k gaming is pretty unrealistic, unless you are doing photo/video editing you don't need the screen relestate on 4K.
Well I have a configuration from last year based on the 4790K and I think you'll be good with that CPU too for sure. It misses some features of the new chipset for sure and do not overclock as good as the successor but if your needs are more "basic" wait a bit more and prices for Z97 boards and 4790K will go down even further and you'll have a slightly slower CPU (5% at best in sinthetics benchmarks) but you'll have a couple bucks more in your pocket. Even now the Z97 config you made is 100$ cheaper, pretty good for just 5% less performance in CPU taks. But instead of the H60 I would buy a Noctua NH-D15 (my config right now). With a 4.4GHz overclock @1.265V on the core I max out at 75°C in AIDA64 and it's whisper quiet, pretty good I guess. In general the top of the line consumer products are pretty futureproof; I've been running a Q6600 till 2 years ago and will still do pretty good today if my needs would've been lower.
On the skylake setup you could save some money on the mobo by going with something like the ASRock Extreme6 on sale at newegg. No need to spend so much for that MSI mobo. Coming in new, unless you spend less on a 1231/B85 combo as was previously suggested I see no reason not to go skylake over a 4790K setup.
i would go with the skylake setup aswell. The price of the 6700K came down somewhat, so that makes it a good option to look at in the US. Msi Z170 Gaming M7 is a good board, but its a bit pricy. The Msi Z170 Gaming M5 is also a good board, and it will save you some cash But there are ofc also other boards you could look at.
Change the WD 1TB black to blue, that will save you a littlebit of cash aswell.
