Psychological Effect of FPS Counter

When I was checking how many frames per second I would get in Battlefield 4 running my card overclocked, I would usually get in the realm of 55-65, but I'd have drops to 40-45 for various reasons (not related to the optimization). I used the counter to see the number of frames per second I was getting, and those frame drops appeared to be really stuttery.

However, since I'm still playing on the same settings but without the counter, it seems to be much smoother (except of course the random stutters due to shitty optimization). I'm sure I'm getting those same fps drops in the more intensive regions, but I don't seem to notice tem really, perhaps because I'm not having the fps displayed to me.

Has anyone else noticed this when playing an intensive game which causes the fps to fluctuate a bit?

self fulfilling prophecy much?

you see that your getting lower fps, your brain goes OH! that's bad- I guess i need to make the rest of me think it's shit.
