Pretty sure my PSU is just old and on its way out but I figured I would post and see what people think.
Today I logged in and started playing a game when my PC just turned off. When it turned back on the boot screen had an error message that read: "Power supply surges detected during the previous power on." I check the monitor in the UEFI and the 3.3 voltage was in the red at 2.9v.
Agree with Streetguru on the overkill part, especially for a single GTX 770 and 4770K. Even with overclocking that is a waste of money. I have a FX-8370 overclocked to 5 GHz, a Gigabyte GTX 970 Gaming OC Edition over clocked 150MHz over turbo on core clock (1500 MHz) and 500 MHz on Samsung memory (7500 MHz) and my 750w Sea Sonic is overkill for my power hungry FX system.
The higher wattage PSU are not any less likely to fail if that makes you worry. Just buy a power supply you can trust. If you are not sure you can check JohnnyGuru's website. His website tests and reviews PSUs extensively. EVGA is usually a great brand as previously mentioned.
Oh I agree, it's total overkill. This PSU was reused from and old multi GPU system. It's actually been in service for about 7 years now so I guess it's not surprising that it's going out now.
Just a quick update. I tested with another PSU to make sure the M/B was ok. Everything seems in order. Under full CPU and GPU load it looks like it pulls 380W from the wall. Can anyone recommend a PSU wattage that would cover me for now and let me add a 2nd GPU later if I decide to.
I wouldn't add a 2nd 770, I would wait for next gen and get a new card. You wouldn't have to deal with any sli issues. An 850W psu should be enough for most dual gpu setups, maybe not something like crossfire 390x.
