PS4 controller for normal games and emulators?

Hi there,

is the PS4 controller the best controller for normal games like GTA IV, race games AND emulators?
The emulated games will be primary from the PS2 (Kingdom Hearts, Gran Turismo and such). Ive got it already up and running with PCSX2.

What I've heard of the PS4 controller is that it is capable of connecting to a computer with bluetooth without much hassle, is this true? Or do I need a specific controller, programs and much tweaking?

If possible it would like a wireless controller. But I've had much problems with wireless mice, like the Cherry ZF-5000. So if problems would be likely it isnt a must.

My computer and laptop are in my profile, both will be used for this.

Thanks in advance,

Wendell has said that it's just a Bluetooth device so it should work fine.

Oh yeah you're right, so thats where I've heard that it will work fine.

Do you have some experience with the PS4@PC?

The PS4 controller works great with PC, so does the PS3 controller. I've used both regularly.

You will need to find yourself a copy of DS4Tools. Tutorials are everywhere. As long as you have a half decent USB dongle, it will work flawlessly.

The PS4 controller will natively connect to windows, but it will just be a "general" controller. the DS4Tools software tricks windows into believing it's an xBox controller, so it will work with all games that support it.

No but I have played with a wired 360 controller. I use it regularly and it works flawlessly.

I use the PS3 Controller and it is wonderful, but if I had to replace it the PS4 controller is just the best mass market controller out there for me money. And it works great with PC.

PS4 controllers work with the newest Linux Kernel

Ok, thats a good answer.

But, i've read on this site that i can connect the controller through usb OR bluetooth with the drivers supplied with the programs linked in this tutorial: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2429965,00.asp .

So this means I can play wired or wireless over bluetooth with the same controller?

I've been searching and I couldnt find any real" PS4 controllers with the micro USB connector. But I would like to have this PS4 one:

or the PS3 controller, which seems to have an Micro-USB Connector.

Which should I take when I want to have the possibility to play both wired and wireless?

I'm pretty sure they all have microUSB connectors (otherwise, how do they charge?) - it's just that they don't come with a cable. I guess typically the cables come with the PS4 itself, but you should be able to get a microUSB cable if you don't already have one and use that.

Everyone I've heard says that the PS4 controller is better.

Also, PS4 controller support for Linux was improved as of 3.16, if that means anything to you.

PS4 have micro-USB connectors, PS3 have mini. It will work both wired and wirelessly with the DS4 software

As someone who purchased a DS4 controller solely to play games on PC, this thing works great (with DS4Tool, naturally). It works fine by itself for games that support DirectInput, but DS4Tool allows it to play as an XInput device.

For wired, any standard micro-USB cable like the one for your phone will work. For wireless, a decent Bluetooth dongle connects easily with the DS4, (though if the battery is low on the controller, it may start losing connection occasionally). Just need to go into the settings once to connect the controller and every time after will connect automatically.

Personally, there is no better way to play most 2D platformers like 1001 Spikes or Shovel Knight or Rogue Legacy (thanks to that beautiful D-pad) and emulators for 3D games like Twilight Princess. Only thing is that I have not tried it on Linux so I cannot comment how well that works, though it should work just fine. (Also, hold down the PS button when finished using until the light is completely off or else the controller will stay on until it dies)

So it will be the PS4 controller then.

Thank you all for your help, tips and time

Have a nice day! :)

I have the DS4 and I use it for emus and other controller based games. Ds4Tool isnt being developed anymore but forks of the program have active developemt

I use the DS4Windows by J2K (the second link) since the 1st one has ads. You can assign profiles to it and what not but there is a limitation with BT for me anyway. Say I want to play a game that uses DInput like the old Need for Speed games, I cannot "hot swap" between input modes unless you have the Micro USB cable plugged into your computer. Other than that, I have no issues with it what so ever. You can change the lightbar as well and make it flash to tell you how much battery life you still have till you gotta charge it. I wish though I can "hot swap" between input modes like the Logitech F series controllers.
