Proxmox usb help?

Howdy guys. I’m having a bit of trouble with proxmox and could use your expertise. I have multiple VMs set up in proxmox. I also have a usb drive (32gb sandisk ultrafit). I can connect the usb drive to one of the VMs if I attatch it in the hardware options or use the Proxmox Master terminal. The drive will then show up as multiple drives (for each partition on the usb) on whatever system I attached it to. The VM system will then ask me to format the drive for windows, which I do. I can do whatever and copy my files to it, then I eject it in the VM to safely unmount the drive. The problems happen after that. When I try to attach the formatted drive with files on it to another VM the drive fails to show up in windows explorer or disks. Using device manager shows me that it is plugged in and correctly recognized by the 2nd VM. It shows up as a disk drive in device manager, but it shows 0gb as being usable and I don’t seem to know how to mount it to the 2nd system in a way that would allow me to get data off of it or would get it to show up on windows file explorer. Hopefully someone smarter than me or someone with more experience in proxmox will point something obvious out, but currently the drive only shows up (on the 1st vm it is mounted to) after being freshly formatted, then it fails to show up on the 2nd system after having any data written to it.

thank you for your time.

Do you attach it as a USB device, or as a block/scsi device. FYI I’d try doing it as a USB device.

Alternatively you could setup a windows SMB share, connect your VMs to it and use it to transfer files between your VMs.

If you already haven’t, shutdown the VMs before moving the USB device. Don’t hotswap the USB device while the VMs are running.

I shutdown the VMs. I attached it as a USB device. I ended up having to clear space on my google drive and uploading my 7gb file there. It’s not ideal, but it worked. I still just assumed that I was doing something wrong. I’d find it hard to believe that swapping a USB storage drive between VMs would be so hard. There is probably a simple fix somewhere.
