Parents promised a new PC after Christmas so this is what I plan to buy. Hoping to order parts early January. Instead of listing them here you can have a permalink.
I wouldnt recommend a SLI build with a micro atx case, if you really want two gtx 680's get a gtx 690 instead with that case, mobo combo.
Unless this is a rendering rig, in which case a i5 3570k would be extremely underpowered, 32GB of ram is a HUGE waste. Get 8GB of ram instead, upgrade later if you need to.
The NZXT sentry is more of a gimmick thing. It performs fine enough, but its slow and gets old quick, there are much better fan controllers for less.
I would try to find a Benq, Asus or Samsung Syncmaster monitor that meets your needs for that price range, Acer is not a very good manufacturer. They use pretty garbage internals for there monitors, so I doubt that its a true 120hz panel.
For gaming, switch out the g510 for a ducky or filco mechanical. Much better keyboards for the money.
I say stick with a big name for your first mechanical keyboard like a Logitech G710+ or CM Storm Quickfire Pro but I like Cherry MX Brown switches the best. Blues are great but are too loud for me. Blacks are too hard to press. Reds are intriguing but I've never used reds before. If you like the "big name brand" mechanical keyboard then you can graduate to Filco and the such for your next one!
Asus makes some pretty good monitors but I haven't used a TN panel in ages because my needs for a monitor are everything else > gaming. Thus I use IPS panels which don't have that 120Hz at all.
If you're going to eventually go up to 32GB of ram. Buy 16GB now in 2x8GB sticks and upgrade from there. Otherwise you'd end up with 2x4GB and then you have to buy 4x8GB to upgrade to 32GB and the 4GB sticks become useless.
A single 690 would probably be better than dual 680, and quieter, cooler, etc.
I don't understand why you'd go with a mATX setup but I guess it makes sense if you're going to be using it as a lan box. I'd probably go with the ASRock board that Tallgeese chose.
Ditch the WD Black drive, they aren't much faster, if at all, than normal drives at 7200 rpm but they do have the 5yr warranty but who buys drives in hopes they fail? You should just get a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB for a speed drive for games and programs, then a huge WD green drive (3TB EZRX) for mass-storage like movies and por-... music.
Also SSD should be either Samsung 840 Pro or OCZ Vector since you're making a baller machine. This totals up to 3 harddrives which is pretty much the ideal situation for now.
The PSU that Tallgeese picked out is a great choice.
I plan to take this rig wherever I go. friend's houses, lan parties, even vacation. I chose the vulcan because it's the best ( I think most will agree that this is minimal opinion). As for the HyperX 3k, I was going to ask why that and not an 840. I will probably end up buying the build that TallGeese made for em (thanks a lot c:), but will switch out the SSd to an 840 since it is better. Unless it is being compared to the regular 840, in which I have no idea if the HyperX 3k is better...
32GB RAM is useless indeed. You won't ever be able to max that out. 8GB is safe, 16GB is luxury.
For the keyboard, I guess you live in the US. Rosewill just made a backlit mechanical keyboard with brown cherryMX keys.I would love to have it, except I use the Swiss keyboard model :-(
The deal with mine is is kinda particular is that I want to remove the GTX690 shroud to replace the cooling with 2 Antec H20 Külers. I don't know if that will be be physically possible yet. My true incentive is that the Corsair H100i is noisy and expensive. The Prodigy would solve all my problems in this regard, but I find this absolutely retarded that the Prodigy only allows iTX motherboards (2 slots only!) when I can get a smaller case with a more powerful motherboard such as the Formula V Gene, get the GTX690 and slide in a really nice audio card.
As for your choice for a motherboard, this is what I'd recommend. Many reports say that it's the best. It's even got 5Ghz WiFi-N.
Also, I've chosen the Crucial Ballistix LP RAM because of this article.
Rest assured I consider my config optimal. It's small, very powerful and quiet. The only issue I have right now is choosing between the OCZ Vector and the Samsung Pro 840 SSDs. The rest is a a no brainer. All I need now is the cash :-X
And don't get Razer stuff. Razer sucks. I know because I've been buying their crap for years.
OCZ is not doing well as a company, I would avoid them unless the price is really great. I dont think that those Kulers are going to get even close to fitting. Get a custom loop instead. Cost a bit more, but alot less... getto.
