Proposed change network architecture

I currently have a Plex server running on my network-attached storage. I want to add a server in between my NAS and the rest of the network. The diagram above with the red ink shows the proposed idea. Currently, as shown in the diagram with all black ink, my NAS is connected directly to the network at 1000 base 10 and to my editing computer at ten gigibit. My goal is to add a server in between the NAS and the network to act as a Plex server and a cloud storage server using the space on the NAS. Currently my NAS hosts my Plex server as a freenas plug in. I am proposing the new architecture because I believe it adds a layer of security. I have also been unable to get a cloud storage solution to run on my freenas server. Has anyone tried my proposed Network solution before and if you have what advice do you have for me when setting up this style of Network architecture?

My server will be running Microsoft server 2012 datacenter. Using hyper-v I will have the Plex server and Cloud file solution running in a virtual machine who's operating system I have not yet decided upon. Plex and the Cloud solution will point to a VM/Host Shared drive. The shared drive will be a network location pointing to a folder located on the NAS.

The only details about the server that is finalized is that the CPU will be a SR0KQ Intel Xeon E5-2650 8 core 2.00GHz 20M 8GT/s 95W processor which is currently in inventory. The rest of the server specifications is currently to be determined.

I'm a novice about pretty much everything, but I do have a similar setup. But instead of using PLEX I have a win12 datacenter r2, hosted with Hyper-V. The only thing I can think of ATM is to dedicate a 10gigabit nic to the PLEX server so you won't have any thruput issues. I will return if anything else comes to mind..

Personally I'd keep the 10g link between the NAS and the work station and just have the plex server on a gigabit connection, I doubt very much you'd need more than that for plex.

I mostly use windows and know very little about PLEX, but unless the PLEX server just points to the IP of the NAS and lets you access it directly you would have a huge bottleneck.

If the NAS is connected to a switch, not going thru the PLEX. Like if it was a mounted harddrive on a win server.

The plex server is used for streaming video, a high def video is going to have a bit rate of like 12mbps or 20mbps maybe, so you can have a dozen or more going over gigabit no problem, the network isn't going to be the bottoleneck in that situation.

You don't need to put the plex server physically between the nas and the rest of the network, just connect them both to the switch. If you're really concerned over security then put a firewall on the NAS so only the plex server can access it.

So that only the PLEX and the workstation can access it. FTFY
