I created a list of parts based off general comparitive shopping, a 2000 dollar Linus Tech Tips build vid, and then checked the Logical Increments chart and found it lined up in the Outstanding bar. I don't plan on spending too much more than 1500 and my build's at 1300 currently without the monitor.
TLDR Basically I have a good idea of what I want already I'd just like some more experienced opinions on my particular choices. It's all in this amazon wishlist I've made public.
Thank you c:
More info: using it for Photoshop, games on high setings, heavy browser usage. Generally future proof.
Alright!!! :D Thank you very much for your input. My only doubt is whether I should fork out more on the GPU but I honestly don't see that extra 200 taking me very far (for a GTX 980 over the 970 lol). Can you/anyone suggest a better GPU that's good bang for buck?
I'd easily go with the 390 over the 970, performs the same if not better and has twice the VRAM, and costs the same. The sapphire nitro and MSI cards are both decent.
Might want to go with some lower profile RAM for the sake of ease when upgrading your cooler later on, to something that might have harsher height limits.
Motherboard and CPU are solid (lol same as me!).
Might be worth going with a WD blue over a WD black, they're supposedly quieter and the extra warranty of a black IMO isn't really worth the additional price.
You could also save a bit on the case and hard drive, drop the DVD drive(do you really need it? get a USB one it'll be more useful overall) and up your cooling to a 240m AIO that'll run pretty quietly. like a nepton 240m they're about $120
Errghhh choices. Yeah double the amount of VRAM (8GB over 4GB) would be great for dealing with all those high def frames. So I'm going with the 390. I'll meet Pouncer in the middle and go for a 2TB Green drive. The low profile dims are actually cheaper than the high profile ones LOL. The PSU sounds like a good idea for future proofing. Thanks guys for all your help <3
Street, the drive was mainly for installs. Is it viable to just download everything off steam/internet and get Windows on a usb? (Can you buy them as usbs?) Either way its only 20 bucks, and I'd rather have it than fiddle with external things. Im just wondering if the extra 70 bucks for the AIO is worth the cooling capabilities, how long do water systems last anyway?
Probably not the best idea, those aren't very good to run in a system, at this point they're really only worth using as archive drives, they're slow and cheap for a good reason. there is a hitachti 2tb drive that's 7200RPM however that's fairly cheap https://pcpartpicker.com/part/hitachi-internal-hard-drive-0f10311
A lot of dvd drives are just collecting dust at this point, lots of games are mostly digital only for PC it's a pretty simple matter to make a windows USB, you can get the .iso from microsft, or other sources where it costs 100% less and just put it on a drive using a program like rufus, if you use the microsoft iso you'll still need a product key
That's pretty much what I'm using them for. Just storing photos and videos, all my most-used programs and games are going on the SSD. Looking into it I think I'll just go with either the Blue or the hitachi. Looking at the case it could definitely accomodate the radiator on the top vent.
I do have my laptop so that windows download wouldn't be a problem. I don't plan on going anywhere near 2000, sticking around the 1500 range.
for 1500 you could go X99 pretty easily, that'll set you up for like ever
here ya go, should run fairly silently as well, could swap the memory for 2x8gbs as well if you wanted to go 32gbs in the future, no real reason for that though
Ah yes looking into all the specs on Newegg the x99 has way more expandability aha, very worth the extra 100. And the extra 20 bucks for the case is for the sound dampening walls, but much less cable management and thus less airflow. I think I'll take the full tower tower since it'll be easier to manage as my first PC build. The quad channel support on the mobo would go great with that quad stick DDR4 memory. I think I'll stick with the more popular/trusted Samsung over the Sandisk.
Only thing I'm unsure about now is the CPU. More cores and L3 cash....or more single core Mhz and cheaper... ugh. The 5820k performed 35% better on geekbench, which is supposed to simulate real world scenarios. So I think realistically the 5820k would be better...am I right in saying this?
Uhm, do you have any other fans? The Phanteks website tells me that the case comes with only the front 200mm and the rear 140mm fan. Maybe a 140mm airflow fan for the top exhaust would be a good idea. Nitpicking, really. can be added later on if you feel the system being too hot.
Real world performance depends on what you are doing with it. Anything that scales with multiple cores will be faster on the 5820K. Frankly I do not know what professional software you are running. I've seen dual socket Xeon machines filling up 64 Gigs of RAM and I know of algorithms that do not run faster with faster CPU clock.
Just go with the 5820K. Whining over X99 is like lamenting that your Ferrari does not parallel park that well.
Had to re-do my partlist from my previous post as I forgot about the ridiculous currency/shipping costs from Amazon. So, now buying from U-Mart in Australia. Anyway my original budget was 1500 but im willing to take that up to 2000 (AUD) for Photoshop, high-settings games, media, heavy browser use.
My suggestion would be to ditch x99. You don't need it for photoshop or for gaming. Go to Skylake or haswell and you should have enough left over to get a good sized ssd. When working with large files in programs like photoshop, the times loading and saving and even redering are largely effected by the speed of your storage. Also, I would say that 16gb of ram is a minimum. Photoshop and now gaming both use a lot of ram.
Yeah considering I can't take advantage of that 4x4GB DDR4 memory the x99 is pretty pointless. I feel as though 240GB should be enough for what I'll be doing. The Kingston has a read AND write of 450MBps. Any suggestions on particular mobos?
A 500gb ssd would be enough for photoshop and a good number of games. I currently have a 250gb ssd and have to be rather careful just for games. Given the prices, I would go with a 500gb if I were buying now.
As for the mobo, you don't need anything special, especially with a xeon which can't be overclocked.
The cpu, a xeon should be a good choice both for photoshop and gaming and is a decent price.
Okay so I agree with the ram and ssd. But the Mobo and CPU certainly seam like a huge downgrade...hm. Would the ram fit on the micro atx board with the ram? I can't tell with partpicker as it doesn't list those parts haha.
I don't know much about mobos and I can't say Ive ever needed anything special anyway aha. Your selections have knocked off about 220 dollars from my list.
Okay so the CPU is starting to sound better with the 24/7 run design, lower running cost and lower purchase cost.
I suppose after all that rambling my only concern is if the Hyper 212x can fit on the ATX microboard with the ram installed?
Yeah. It will be fine. You don't really need an aftermarket cooler though. I've been running a 4430 and 280x build for a year and a half with the stock cooler. Never gets over 65C in game. Also very quiet (the cpu cooler is at least). If you already have it, go ahead and throw it on there, otherwise, save the money.
EDIT: About the cpu, you wouldn't notice the difference in game. As for photoshop..... I can't find many decent benchmarks, but you likely wouldn't notice it either. You are looking at saving a few seconds by spending the extra hundreds of dollars. Why bother?
