I want to aim this one mostly at Wendell, but I am sure others have their own input.
So I have been working in the enterprise area for about 2 and a half years. I am currently changing jobs, but my previous role was out in the field working with many different customers on a consultancy/maintenance basis.
I have come across a number of other IT professionals in that time, and each have their own folder on a HDD named tools (or something to that affect), that they use everyday. Examples include VNC installers, a copy of 7Zip, Network scanning tools, IP grabbers, kkey grabbers, password revealers etc.
What would you guys use, or carry around in your toolkit?
MCC, Putty, Dameware, CNA, VMware, are all my daily drivers. There are some others, but they are mostly niche things. Also a lot of web gui, Solarwinds Orion, Dell Clearpass stuff like that.
Go deep with wireshark :P various HP server diag tools and dell server diagnostic tools, kali Linux and its whole package of network stuff yes I'm cheating with kali Linux ,treesize , a few HDD SMART checkers ,putty, VMware with a redhat image that acts like a PXE server for imaging purposed and diagnostic Linux builds, and a trove of other misc tools.
What about physical tools?
No phillips drivers, data transfer cables, anything?
If you ever worked on HP server hardware its at most a torx key, at home I got a whole kit but nowadays its a torx key and a hammer maybe a phillps head if a dell dies oh yes a KVM trolley I always forget the KVM trolley
My serial cable never strays to far from my desk. lol
Also a fluke network tester, that thing is the greatest tool I have ever used.
copper or fiber? I use the JDSU gear for both
I havn't been trained for fiber work yet, so just copper for now.
I keep a Portable Apps folder on my flash drive that has all of my daily driver tools on it. WinDirStat, WiseUninstaller, IOBit Uninstaller, ClamWin, Spybot, Malwarebytes, HiJackThis, Eraser Portable, Ping Plotter, TeamViewer etc. etc.
I also keep WiFi Analyzer on my phone which can be mildly useful.
This also reflects that i spend most of my time fixing workstation hardware and exchange/outlook issues and doing virus/malware cleanups and removals.
