Back story gigabyte H61M-S2B3 socket 1155 had a I3-2100 cpu 8gb of ram a 1 tB sata hd a 750 ti gtx 2 gb bought a I5 to replace the I3 tried to install it by swapping out the cpu only with the power cord disconnected from the back. Tried to fire up the computer cpu fan spins on and off video card spins . What did we do wrong. . Would we have fried the motherboard . Then we tried to rwplace the power supply. Same fans spinnng. Tried to replace the dvd/cd drive same fans spinning. Removed the cmos battery Same fans spinning. Then tried clear the cmos with jumper with the 24pin and 4 pin (12 v) plugged on to the motherboard mind you the power cord was disconnected from the computer. Next tried swapping out the cpu I5 to I3 with 24 pin and 12 v disconnected from motherboard clear cmos waited 20 sec plugged on 24pin and 12 v pin turned on computer same fans spins. What should I do give up on computer and buy new mb. ram, psu,cpu case cause the one we have now is small. I could buy a used xeon socket2011 or buy 1151 skylark*

What bios on the motherboard?
if it's an early board with a newer i5 for the socket it may need an update or may not be supported
I know a fair amount not to know it all to mess up a comouter at the same time. Feeling like a failure
Bought a I5 1155 socket. Not sure of the bios version but it has never been updated since owning the computer for 5 years

Should be supported, pop the i3 back in and update the bios potentially
