Im new to the forum and this will sound like the dumbest question ever, but how do I pm a member in the forum? 
There doesnt seem to appear a ‘message’ button on the profile page. Is it because Im new to the forum?

Basically yes. 
The reason why you don´t see a PM button yet is because you are a new user at trust level 0.
In this case you cannot send private messages to other members just yet.
However you will be obtaining trust level 1 pretty quickly.
As soon as you are promoted to TL1 you will be able to send private messages to other forum members.
If you click on a user name a small popup shows up with the users profile card.
At the right there is a message button.

Additional information in regards to requirements for obtaining Basic trust level TL1.
- Entering at least 5 topics
- Reading at least 30 posts
- Spend a total of 10 minutes reading posts
This is all you would need to be automatically promoted to TL1.
And then you will be able to send private messages.
Are PMs archived even after deletion?
If so, please mention not transmitting sensitive information via PM without proper encryption if someone is concerned about leakage.
