Something that I wonder about is even if you can get the laws in place to stop governments or organisations collecting your data does that really matter when you know that they have the technical capability. Because as long the technical capability exists then the possibility that you are being watched is there, and I think it is the possibility that you could be being watched that is going to change the way you behave and think.
This has been talked about or referred to a bit on the show before by referring to the 1984 movie.
So are we living in a 1984 world already regardless of the politics and just because of the technical capabilities?
For example I carry around a phone and so it is possible for me to be tracked with the GPS, but it is also possible to be tracked just through the phone signal strength as well. And then it would be possible to be tracked through satellite photos as well. maybe no one is doing that today but maybe someone is collecting the data. In 50 years time will someone be able to search how often I visit hospitals and what me average stay was?
For example I like exploring and finding spots where no one else goes and can get to. I also do renovations on my house so I by builders plastic and saws. Is this sort of information going to get me short listed on some future database of people that could be dumping and disposing of bodies. And then even the police don't think I am dumping bodies does the fact that I am on this short list mean I get a lower credit rating or raise alarms in a medical database that I shouldn't be given drugs.
We already live in the world described here. The only question is, to what extent? Tin foil hats aside, the potential for power abuse is very real.
