Priority, SSD or CPU?

I am going to be building a computer. It will be used for gaming and possibly editing and Adobe After effects. My budget is roughly $700. I currently have a setup with an SSD for an OS. If I do not use an SSD, I could get the FX-8350 instead of the FX-6300. What is more worth it, the SSD or the CPU?

Thanks!

I would say in relation to the build get a 120 and skip the 8350 unless you are editing alot.

I have to disagree. I think that getting a 8350 would be the smarter move. That cpu should last you a good long while both for gaming and editing. SSDs, on the other hand, are getting cheaper and there has been mention of a new storage media which will be much more affordable than SSDs. That should come with time. I don't recall what that new stuff is called, but it was mentioned on the tek, if I am not mistaken. Also, 120gb is really not much space at all. I don't think that you would have room for much more than your OS and the standard programs.

The decision is ultimately up to you though.

i think what you're talking about is the 3d NAND where they stack nand chips on top of each other.

Using an SSD to accelerate two fast data drives in raid0 through a caching implementation that accelerates your most commonly used applications, files, data (not just whatever you fit on your OS drive, which isn't necessarily the same) is another option to consider. You could buy the two drives now, and implement the caching soloution in the future when you have some more money.

As for the ram I recommend against it because it is more expensive than some better ram and looks like the tall cooling fins could interfere with larger heatsinks which could be a problem. Additionally I hope you are aware that there is supposed to be a big product announcement by amd at hawaii in about two weeks concerning their next generation of graphics cards which I think will have to compete with Nvidias next gen of cards released 1H next year. In other words they will have to be better than the 700 series as Nvidia will launch cards that are better than their stopgap generation to replace them.

Thanks!

Thanks Everyone, all you Comments have been informative and very helpful!

I believe that WD drive is significantly slower than the STX000DM001 drives from seagate (which top out at arround 200MBps. I would recommend that you see if you can get a 2TB drive aswell as they are only a couple of dollars more.
