PowerShell is open sourced and is available on Linux

https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/powershell-is-open-sourced-and-is-available-on-linux/

Whenever microsoft does something that looks like a good thing I'm always very skeptical and weary.
But since I have no real experience using Powershell I really don't understand the significance of it going open source.

Anyone know what use linux would have for Powershell?
And how (or why) would microsoft benefit from Powershell running on linux and mac.

does it require root privileges to run?

If it does,
then you know what their real intentions are....

Like with Intel and LG, I'm more interested in the why now. I've worked with people who'd probably like this kind of thing. Creepy video tho.

I think Windows just want there Powershell to be more used. Right now its dying. Its a powerful tool but nobody uses it. Even a Apple User uses more command line then a Windows user.

I am trying to put my bias and ignorance aside and ask : What is the benefit of this ?
What stands to be gained from this.

Being a veteran of Powershell in Windows, I really wonder what the hell this is about. Without .Net, there are very few aspects of Powershell to write home about. If you're admin'ing Windows machines, SQL Server, or VMs in Azure, you need the shit out of Powershell. You start with v4 and pretend that there aren't any previous versions.

But if you've got *nix experience, and are on *nix boxes, Xonsh is probably closer to what you want.

............................................................. WTF is this shit?

Someone kick M$ out, how did they get in here?

It's Windows doing typical windows stuff. They just trow stuff @ us hoping it sticks and that we can't get get it of us and with little bad luck in 5 years we all HAVE to use powershell :p

................................................................................

No.

In 5 years fish might get fixed, but literally NO ONE is going to use it.

MAYBE some dumbass at a college will. But no one is going to touch it.

They said in the 80s the same about MS Word....

Because Crystaltype was absolute garbage, vi based editors were awful, and anything else was too old.

WordPerfect? it died same way Netscape died.
well apparently it still lives but way lesser market as it used to be,

Meh, it was OK, but it got shoved into the back.

But if Microsoft makes this move they got a plan and best is to learn what it wants so it can be tackled down.

@DeusQain said it would be used to install M$ services (in-house skype, LYNC, Shareworks, etc) on stuff outside of Azure.

Just.

Ugh.

If it becomes a standardized tool I am becoming Amish.

nah just support this

Yeah if you do it correct you can have Linux with Windows shell :p
but opposite is possible too, you can make GTK run in Windows :p

I'm not so hot on all this unless we could make software work because of all this, I still love the level of control and customization I get with Linux, and it's only getting better
