What power supply unit(s) should I get for quad R9 295X2s and a 4960X at 1.4v 4.7GHz? An R9 295X2 is two R9 290Xs strapped onto one PCB. This is like having eight 290Xs.
I presume this is for crypto currency purposes.
Well in 100% applications the 290x pulls upto 375Watts. So yea 3000 watts.
You'd need to get multiple PSUs and wire them together (bridging the green to black on all PSUs) to get them to start at the same time. So Yea 3 1200watt units should be enough to cover the whole system.
Gaming and crypto when I'm asleep or away. Do you think dual 1500W PSUs would be enough?
Well bear in mind you can only use 2 of those dual GPUs for gaming (due to the limitations of Crossfire)
No, the GPUs alone at full tilt will consume an estimated 3000watts. Which leaves no room for the rest of the system.
If the system is going to be used crypto-mining, consider putting the other 2 GPUs into another system (noting power is required in terms of CPU and RAM) so that you can leave it mining 24/7. With the Main system being used for gaming and mining.
I know that only two cards will be used for gaming. I want to have OctoFire (that doesn't actually work) for bragging rights. I think quad-card setups look cool, I also don't have another system to put the GPUs into, and I prefer to have one PC.
