Power Supply Needs?

Hey, I am going to build a new PC this summer because mines kinda getting old and dated. My 9600gt just cant take it anymore. I am seeing more and more lag with each new release. So, my new card which shall remain nameless requires 600 Watts. Now, I may plan on SLI. If I were to SLI 2 or 3 way how big of a power supply would I need since the 600W required obviously wouldnt handle that.

Uhh, first you have to tell us WHAT card...
If youre going SLi, 850w+, but this all depends on the cards and what cpu, how many harddrives etc etc..

Well, if your talking about the GTX 480, a 600 watt wont do as well with sli. From what I've heard about the GTX 480 is that you have to add like 100-150watts per card in power requirements. SO if your going to SLI or even TRI sli, go with at least an 850.

GTX480's in SLi = Get a 1000W+
470's = 850W+

Green is right, though people generally over estimate their power consumption, you certainly don't want to underestimate. Power supplies that are over loaded get unstable. For two way SLi GTX480's, you're going to need a good 1000 watt PSU. I recommend Ultra, since the quality is god like. OCZ is also pretty freaking awesome. Probably wouldn't recommend Kingwin, since the quality is generally shoddy.

Have you sorted out your parts yet? Just want to know your budget, even though it has nothing to do with this topic. =P

Enermax Revolution 85+ is by far the most badass PSU' on the market.. Never dies ;)

Damn. That's a fine PSU, only thing I'm a bit worried about is the multiple +12 volt rails. I hear that more than one is bad. But as far as I'm concerned, as long as the load is properly balanced, it's fine.

Well, my build plans are to get an AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition with an 850W Sli Ready power supply and either 470s or 480s...
I was gonna wait till AMDs 6 core processors come out but I cant wait that long.

I could easily post every part with newegg links but only if necessary. I need to know everything will work before I buy it all. I know a good deal in building PCs but I have never dealt with SLI and frankly it confuses me with power consumption lol. I thought if each card needed 600 minimum would I multiply by 2 for each extra card? Guess not but anyways yeah.

Wait... I thought AMD hates SLI on their boards, is that true?

I am not sure if they do or not. But I found a board that has 2 slots, of course that could be for Crossfire only for all I know. But I am not going to pay $400 for an i7 with a motherboard when I can get almost the same performance much cheaper.

Probably it's CF only, so AMD never learnt anything from their fans. Let's just hope that some companies propose to add an NF200 chipset to solve that problem.

Well im on foreign land when it comes to AMD, but the Graphics Card should work, just one without crossfire though right? There should be no reason it wouldnt.

there are 980a sli boards only two on newegg, the asus and msi. I really wish motherboard makers would take some time and put care into making the amd boards like they do with intel boards even if they have to charge more money i wouldnt mind. What would be great is if evga would make amd boards again.

what do you mean? arent they supposed to be out monday?

Are they really? Well if they are I will go for one of those beasts.

As others have said if you go sli gtx 480 get a 1000 watt psu. 850 will just be hitting the minimum recommended system power. if you go 470s a good 850 should be fine.

do you prefer nvidia? i had the same problem since i have a gts 250 i could use for physx if i got a sli board and a gtx470 or 480. i want to get the amd 6 core so i would have to get an am3 board and their sli boards are limited and the color isnt great and on top of that those boards will most likely get less support. i decided ill just get a 5 series card and make a leo platform system instead. what i hate is that amd is planning the 6 series cards for after fall and using either 32 or 28nm since they had trouble with 40nm, globalfoundries is going to produce them.

I hate ATI, will never buy a card from them. The first one I had was terrible with everything about it, especially drivers.
