So I work for a small local computer repair shop and we have a Dell Inspirion 17R 5720. It has a power on password. I am trying to get it removed so that my employer could sell it either in-house or I can sell it online. Does anyone have any idea on getting the Power-On-Password Removed?
Just Clear The Cmos. Remove the battery for about a week or if it has it use the cmos reset switch.
Maybe contact dell about it?
If its not stolen, then they can probably reset it for you
Remove the computers regular battery, and then take it apart and remove the CMOS battery and let it sit for about 2 days or a week like DJE said. Up to you really. I've had some take a few minutes to actually clear by smashing the power button and holding it. But that's all you need to do to remove the BIOS password.
I've only done this once before. clearing the cmos did not work for me. I had to link a jumper on the board "that was labeled" using a paperclip. although you need to be careful and make sure its the right jumper, otherwise you could short something out. On the laptop i had worked on it was in the ram bay. You may also want to try some external boot sources like another computer or linux device and see if you can reset it using a cmos password tool. Although there must be a reason the computer has a startup password on it.
it could be that the password is stored in tpm.
Then clearing the cmos doesnt work.
I have contacted dell but due to "sensitive" information they will not give me the password. I dont have any information regarding the customer at all. I do however have the unlock hint which is EB878E6F. There is no TPM because it is a Dell Consumer grade machine. If it was a Lattitude that would be different. In regards to CMOS Password tool I have tried a couple but I have not had any sucess with it due to the type of bios of the machine. However if there is an unlock all BIOS tool that is free or a little bit of money that would be great and a possible investment by my employer.
