Postfix Question

I now have my hardware firewall setup (pfsense). I was wonder before I get to setting up my mail server, if I should run postfix on the firewall or on the mail server?

Are there pros and cons for each way of doing it?

And what would be your recommendation?

There's no supported way of running it on pfsense but you could probably make it work if you know what you're doing. I wouldn't recommend it though. Postfix is the MTA, so it pretty much IS the mail server, unless you have a ton of clients I can't think of a good reason why you'd have it on a separate machine from the other parts of your mail server.

There is a postfix package for pfsense

https://doc.pfsense.org/index.php/Postfix

but your point are good so it will go on my mail sever once I buy a domain.

I was under the impression that the postfix package on pfsense was a proxy that would do some filtering before mail was forwarded on to your mail server. Not sure if it can be configured as a stand alone thing, but I've never tried.

thanks for your help though
