The Behemoth
We all probably spent a little time on Newgrounds and sites like it on the early internet, back when Flash was the dominant media format. The Behemoth was born on newgrounds, and captures that same manic energy that early internet creatives were so predisposed to in the best ways.
In a lot of ways, flash was the original indie distribution and gaming platform, and Behemoth helped create and respects those roots. They got their start with alien hominid, and they regularly employ one of my favorite online art collectives for voice acting, music, and animation, and since flash is a dying medium, they’ve turned themselves into one of the last bastions of that original flash insanity.
In their sixteen year tenure as developers, the studio has commited to positive community involvement, hiring out to independent creators, and sustainable, ethical business practices.

Platinum
Originally a group of ex-capcom clover employees, this small studio single-handedly kept the stylish and character action genres alive through the dark ages of open world ubisoft interactive movies.
Known for putting quality bameplay above all else (even before monetary return in a lot of cases) Platinum has slowly become the gold standard in the single player action experience.
Despite being an independent game studio, every major platform company has hired them for highly polished vanity titles and console exclusives, as they routinely produce quality on extreme budget and time constraints

FailBetter Games
Good writing and world-building in games is hard to find, especially in ones that aren’t just glorified choose your own adventure novels.
FailBetter’s roots are in that old style of forum/bbs rpgs that lean very heavily on both, but their new titles offer that same depth and quality without sacrificing good gameplay. If you like immersing yourself in unique worlds and narratives, then this is the company to look for.
