Hello all. A few months ago I built my first gaming rig, to do so I removed the HDD and ram from my old PC to use in my new gaming rig. This leaves me now with a PC that is just lacking ram and a HDD. I have a source of extra income to buy things I want like computer parts and whatnot, which is about 150$ a month. I have thought of buying ram and a HDD for this PC and installing Linux or something but Im having trouble justifying what I would actually use this PC for. Anyone have any suggestions on what uses I could get out of a second "inferior" PC?
as a note this PC has a A10-5700 and no GPU
Dunno what your second is, but I picked up a low power/low heat AMI 1 rig for all my web browsing and netflix needs. It's somewhat useful, seems like it would save a good deal of power.
This PC with the A10 would be the second. I have a 4670k and a R9 280x for my main rig.
In all honesty don't know what to do with my main rig, 8350 and 280x but that hasn't stopped me from keeping my old one and gathering parts for two more, all core 2 duo stuff.
getting into linux is one thing I was thinking of doing with one of my extras and another is a project in and of itself 771 xeon -> into 775 modo by force

that sounds like a good way to use an inferior pc
Keep an eye out for some dirt cheap 2nd hand ram and hdd, and make it a linux box for whatever - a torrent downloading machine, mild home server. Or if you know anyone that is in need of a pc for school work etc and is poor you could make their day and donate it to em and get yo'self some good karma.
You could use the second computer to run a dedicated server. I myself have ownCloud running on my second desktop and that's all that desktop is for. It runs Ubuntu Server 13.10, and then I have virtual servers on there which I use to run things like ownCloud and other stuff. It's a headless server, so when I need to access it I just use virt-manager for all the VM's since it makes my life easy, and SSH when I need to access the host machine. :P
Alternatively, you could set something up for web browsing from bed. :V If your bed is touching the wall like mine is you could wall mount everything and use the computer in bed. :P That's something I wanna do one day, and then just stream games using Steam from my gaming PC to whatever PC I would end up using on the wall.
But I think something like ownCloud is a better idea, as this way you can start taking your data out of other people's cloud servers and store it all on your own server. This way you have complete control over it. And then you could just continue to add storage to your server so that you can store more things. :P It's also a whole lot better than having 5GB free, as with ownCloud you can have 1TB of storage you can access from anywhere in the world (as long as you forward the correct ports). ownCloud also has sharing features, so you can share your files with people if you want and they don't need to have an account on your server. :p :3
