POPOS 20.04 kernel update compatibility

Hi!
I’m on kernel 5.4 and if I apt upgrade it will upgrade to kernel 5.8, is there any possibility of any app become incompatible?

Usually that information is in the release notes or similar.
Here is a link to their support page on upgrading.

Edit. And from what I can tell it is still Kernel 5.4

they upgrade the kernel on the 20.10 to the 5.8, just worried about nvidia drivers

I see, I have a GTX980 at home. I will double check if I run 20.04 or 20.10 (I’m on 20.04 I think).
I did however upgrade earlier this week.

I’ll try to come back to you as soon as I know.

update:

/etc/pop-os$ cat lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Pop
DISTRIB_RELEASE=20.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=focal
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION=“Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS”

You can exclude packages from updating.

I don’t remember what the specific flags were for Debian family OS but if you exclude kernel packages then it will only update other system packages.

I’ve upgraded and played games through steam and Lutris today. No problems what so ever. So atleast my graphics drivers are working correctly.

I’ve updated from 20.04 to 20.10, the 5.8 kernel is downloaded but not active, uname -r still shows kernel 5.4.
How to change this without breaking?
Everything I’ve searched online is about ubuntu but haven’t found much success with it.
Might as well do a fresh install, again… :frowning:

A better way to get the 5.8 kernel is through the Xanmod kernel. Ubuntu’s stock 5.8 isn’t optimized for some new hardware. They just do super minimal tweaks. Xanmod is hardware optimized.
