Poor network speeds on Intel 8265/8275 Wifi

I got myself a Thinkpad X270 running Linux Mint with an intel wifi card that identifies itself like this through lspci:

03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 8265 / 8275 (rev 78)

I got a gigabit FIOS connection and a Google Mesh wireless network that is very fast on every wireless device, except this laptop, that literally crawls. Not completely dead but irritatingly slow. Does anybody know if the Intel 8265/8275 wireless chipset is problematic under Linux? If yes, what would be a good card to buy that is well supported? I tried upgrading to kernel 5.3 but it made no difference at all.
