The thing that I hate most in Linux, besides those who are incredibly hostile and act like assholes, are those who empower these people by saying that this attitude is very wide spread.
So please, Instead of focusing on the assholes, why don't we focus on all the nice people? Why do people have to acknowledge that assholes exist (beyond putting them in their place in a nice way to prevent further problems)?
The best way to deal with an asshole is to ignore him, and pretend that he does not exist. If he is a troll, that would mean that he just failed, because what trolls are looking for is exactly this, having a negative in pact on a person or two, and the real price for them is to effect an entire community.
This is part of the reason I like public linux events, usually if some one meets me then decides to be an asshole they only do it once. The only way to deal with extreme assholes is with your fist. Now that I got that out of my system, back to asking people if their computers are turned on and if they have tried rebooting it. Now to put a disclaimer about not hitting people and done.
Usually I try to correct peoples behavior first as a large amount of them that are not trolling are just looking for attention and don't know a positive way to express themselves. Hell a lot of them are just socially awkward or haven't been in an environment where they can learn to act in a socially acceptable way and have learned to act that way from being treated that way online or just a lack of experiance with being social at all, so I tend to try to help them before I ostracize them. Then there is the special person that you really just need to stop and smile, put a hand on their shoulder, and start slapping the crap out of them.
You know I have seen a lot of people talking about this stuff, but I gotta be honest with you guys. I have not seen anyone who is a true linux ass hole.
I have seen plenty of people who hold their own opinions and some of them have been vocal about them. I have also run into ass holes who are just plain ass holes who happen to be using linux.
However I have never met the classic distro nazi or anything of the sort.
This forum has addressed linux trolls more than any other website I know of, and I have yet to run into a single one.
From what I gather, it is pretty easy to find a toll on the arch and gentoo forums, but other then that I have not really had a single grievance.
Is it just me? Am I just blind or stupid or something?
It really depends on the community most, except a few (reddit and the chans) are really chill. The few communities I mentioned are toxic about most things.
The Linux assholes dont have any power. All that is required is new people keep joining and we all share. The collective IQ of the community will rise and the assholes will be shunned out.
I wish as a newbie I could more actively reward the programming contributions that make Linux better. Id Like to learn to code more but I dont think I would be at the level to contribute to the OS itself any-time soon.
The Linux "assholes" don't have power, unless YOU choose to give them power. In other words, consent to piss you off. No one can make you upset but yourself. Just use what's best for you, then eat this digital slice of pizza, and move on.
You can help get in the IRC of whatever distro you use and chat. Let them know if you find a bug or dependency issue. And let them know if there is a feature you really like. Just talking helps.
Ive jumped into IRC a bunch of times. Im so anti-social my skin crawled and I hit the close button. Asking for help is the last thing I do before I die :(
I want Google to put up the answer so I dont have to talk to anyone most of the time.
Just work on it as best as you can. IRC BTW, is a pretty impersonal way for chatting it may be an hour or two before you get a response. It is the land of the idle people. You could just lurk.
Me too. I haven't really seen to much of Linux ass holes. Logan seems to go on about it quite a bit.
Anyone know where exactly they are lurking?
I am assuming this kind of thing happens around the distro discussions. In general, I never got the whole distro thing. I have messed around with a few distros but never seen the reason to going into major discussions about it.
The distro discussion reminds me of the beginners programming discussion. Nearly every beginners programming topic I see starts off with the most pointless questions, "which ide should I use" or "which language is best for...". The answer really doens't matter. Just use one and be done with it!. Learn to program first and then maybe you might understand the differences.
I avoid these topics like the plague as I also avoid the "which distro" topics. Maybe this is why I haven't come across the ass holes these people.
