Nothing is overclocked and I have never overclocked before. I wanted to get input to whether I should overclock the CPU or GPU to improve performance and get better FPS. I want to know how to overclock, what to use when overclocking, how to test that the overclock is stable and how to put everything back to its original settings.
The HD7950 is easy to overclock and is a very good overclocker for instance i have my hd7950 running at 1100Mhz(core) from 860Mhz stock and 1500Mhz on the vram from 1200mhz stock (ive seen 1200Mhz core clocks on very good 7950's)
Overcocking the cpu can be harder oc'ing the gpu will give the best fps.
Sorry, I don't pre-order much at all but I just got over excited about the game when pre-ordering started. Plus a friend paid for it as a gift so I'm not losing money of it.
I used MSI Afterburner. And changed the core clock from 900 to 1000. I also change the memory clock from 1250 MHz to 1400. But I'm finding it unstable.
I have not change and voltage/power setting. How can I make this overclock work?
With your hardware, I'd start with the CPU. Your GPU is decent, but the 8350 really asks for it. And it makes gaming performance noticeably better, especially in CPU-heavy games. Now your CPU cooler will limit you a little bit there, but for starter you could try to see how high you can go at stock voltage. That should get you to like 4.3 Ghz. Once the system becomes unstable, you can give it some more voltage and then take it from there. 4.5Ghz should be possible without changing the cooler.
If happy with frame rate and quality dont worry about overclocking.
If unhappy overclock - follow the guide cooperman listed for the 7950 - its the best guide around. As too are all the guru3d guides.
oc the cpu last (if even needed) as you will no doubt struggle to see any difference in fps with it oc'd
if still not happy with the fps in the witcher3 wait a bit for driver releases as this is where the big boosts in performance will come, failing that sell it and buy a better gpu or crossfire.
I have already tried overclocking just to see how it is done. After reading up on it and also trying settings people have tried on the same card I have not been able to get a stable overclock.
