Pick a beer, any beer

Ok, I don't know where you live so I'm going to derail this with my local favs.

Saint Ambrois - any beer by them is godly, brewed in montreal.
Propeller (just about anything from there) brewed in Halifax, their IPAs (3 varaitions) are quite something, you may not like them but they have a sucker punch hopppy flavour, the double IPA is my fav, but its 8.2% and will knock you on your ass.
Rickards Red, steller Irish red.
Garrison beer (halifax) they're pretty good, but careful with their specialties, might be amazing or might be crap (raspberry)

If you have a good importer I would recommend trying to get ANY of the garageproject beers. Everything they make seems to be on another level. My favourite from them is death from above.

Ok you are in California. You have access to a bunch of great beers.

Dark beer: Ale Smith's Speedway Stout is fantastic

IPA: Russian River Brewing's Pliny The Elder is amazing if you find this on tap or bottle get it.

Pale: Full Sail's Pilsner and Rouge's Morimoto Soba Ale are booth smoth and tasty.

Maui Brewing's Bikini Blonde is one to look out for too.

Cider:¯(°_o)/¯

On a side note: Triples and Doubles are a great type of ale that don't fit those categories. Look for the Belgian Trappist Monk logo. That is a great place to start.
