Philosophy and Critical thinking community

I have come to realise that this OP was a little confusing as to what I am trying to achieve.

I am trying to use my long history of study into formal logic and critical thinking and my return to university next year to finally complete a degree as a spring board. A springboard to creating university grade free educational material on logic and critical thinking.

As techies and nerd we have all encountered code, which is based upon the formula's of logic. So I thought there would be a nice cross over.

One problem today is the root representations for metaphysics, in Aristotle’s word usage are so loaded with emotion that it is hard to have a rational internal and external discussion.

I think this loading of semantics and the lack of education on how to structure an argument is a major issue in communication.

But my personal opinions aside, my politics and reasons for wanting to create the page will not factor into the educational content. Which will be compiled from university sources and converted into short and long form courses.

I'd agree that subversiveness is a common trait amongst those who want a better world, but I'd also say that conservatives are also subversive in that they oppose new establishments that they were always against to begin with.

I moved this thread to blog as I feel the content suits the category. If you disagree, feel to contact me or any other mod/leader.

There is an argument for subversive homeostasis, as you can never truly create a tabula rasa (clean slate) and transistasis is not always beneficial.

But change (transistasis) is built into reality, and entropy is always there, so what might have been a positive step or a moral action for a person or for society at a certain time is not essentially guaranteed to work at another time.

But I am not arguing for left wing or right wing definitions of conservatism, but that all creators of movements that got titles, or became religions where trying to subvert the culture of the time to a better one.

That can be by stopping change or creating change.

All good. I don't expect a huge response to this except for a little discussion. But I have been active here for a while and apart from the last round of nuking of the community which I stayed out of I thought I might get some interest =)

Too true. This complicates things as understanding that point is required to see why something that is seemingly the same thing can actually be contradictory or detrimental.

It's in a youth's nature to oppose the establishment, whatever that establishment is at the time. I find this to be... problematic, to say the least, because people are so naturally inclined to oppose something above them without even first developing an understanding. You can have a situation where a particular establishment is actually for the best... but the newest generation lacks the understanding to see that and so things change... for the worse, in such situations.

stroking real beard

There where movements for change of the 50's and 60's in Australia that included demolishing "old" sandstone buildings so in Sydney the ones we have left where mostly in use but they where slated for demolition for new cement "modern" ones.

The heritage movements saved those in the end.

The environmental movements have aspects of not wanting change to, but this is a change to a current world view that maybe or is destructive.

Very true, change is not always good and/or bad, Antiestablishment and Antidisestablishment, is about other questions then just change. Rational change has a progression of steps where as all the horrible historical accounts of change where people trying to clean slate society or create a new by the complete destruction of a thing or peoples.

Youth is more conducive to radical idea's and age to conformity in most cases as the grey matter of the brain changes.

But this doesn't change that entropy and change exist and can not be stopped, but should in a rational society be guided to a more equal and just society.

In the end my project is not to tell people what to think, it is about the systematic logic that was created by figures like Lewis Carol. And understanding of epistemology devoid of right or left wing ideology.

Unfortunately these things are not highly valued in our education system.

Change is bound to happen, so trying to prevent it will only make it happen in a reckless way. I would think this means that change should be controlled and guided in a thought out and empirical way. An end goal needs to be in mind, but also the steps to reach that goal, all while not overlooking any potential consequences and costs.

My biggest issue with progressive movements today is that they are emotionally driven ideologies that look at a problem and feel their way to conclusions and solutions without doing any critical thinking or calculating. I was in an argument with a male feminist on YouTube the other day and he was just so put off by how I speak and my "lack of empathy" that he had a very hard time so much as processing the empirical things I was talking about. People need to understand that the logical and rational side of things must come first and emotion is what needs to be put on hold, otherwise you are bound to come to terrible results. Herein lies why change is dangerous. Change isn't brought about by thought, for the most part. Thought is slow and careful, it gets little done over a long period of time because it's more about getting it right, rather than simply getting it done. So instead, change is mostly brought about by feeling, because that moves people to action and it is volatile... and therefore uncontrollable, unpredictable... and dangerous.

I have been sworn at for 5 minutes strait for offering the double seat I had on a bus to 2 women. I was being a patriarchal sexist moron, as opposed to being a polite friendly person who had just crawled out of bed and was heading off to a party, when they had obviously been at work all day.

Unfortunately most people even when choosing positive sentiments have about warm fuzzy feeling as proof of their claims and warm fuzzy feeling are not proof positive of anything.

I am pro gay marriage, I am pro rights for prostitutes, I am pro equality and I am pro for people having rational arguments.

And to argue over emotions is called an argument of will. It is not an argument you can win or loose as neither side is going to do more then get upset. The only way to win is through an act of aggression to make the other person loose freedoms.

Inductive and deductive reasoning are what gave us empiricism and dragged our society out of the dark ages. Yet most moral and ethical claims are emotion based.

Unfortunately I blame the fact that there is no net worth in having a education system that enables people to be educable vs knowing some mostly outdated biased facts and some job appropriate skills.

Pretty sure posting your own Patreon breaks this rule. @Eden Confirm for me please?

I'm all for philosophy and critical thinking though.

Oops I just broke the religious rule.
- Sorry @Eden

give me a sec to edit
Edit: Edited
If there is an issue with the 2 patreon references I made I can remove them. Was not planning on making anymore.

How do I get one of those nice little grey titles by my name?

I've always wanted "Its Majesty." Not Her Majesty, not His Majesty... Its Majesty. Or perhaps something better... haven't really decided yet.

Considering the topic of your OP, there may be some leeway with religious discussion, providing it stays within the realms of civility. But that's up to the overlords to decide, not us.

@Tek_Elf

I was given that title by a mod.

It wasn't that necessary to my point and better safe then sorry, the forum has had a few to many implosions of youtube persona leakage don't want to add to it. The last implosion by soul fallen was cathartic/based on truth so I left it alone.

@Tek_Elf yup need to be more active and get known then get a mod to help ya.

@MograineLefay nice title btw :) good work.

Unfortunately there isn't a lot of money in the idea and it's not really sponsor friendly material and etc. I don't see my video's getting a lot of traction and I don't want to flood my site with annoying ads.

I have about 10 year's of uni under my belt though I never finished a degree just liked to study till I got the idea then sneak into other courses or travel.
I have seen lectures at most uni's in Sydney and studied at uni's all up and down the east coast of Australia.

Unfortunately again being a highly over-educated philosopher (in the true sense of loving sophia, knowledge) isn't exactly um valued and I can't be bothered writing books to cause sensation and outrage.

So I have been toying with this idea for a while.

Anyways the site will be free, I just need a little help covering costs, though there will be no paywalls between the content and eventually the .torrent server and everyone.

The forum will require work and moderation to make it a nice community like the one here, and I have only so many hours in the day. So I will need to see some interest and get some help or I won't have time to make money to cover the costs and do the research and try for my own startup, which is also in the works.

Edit: I tried joining other philosophy forums, only to be hit with attempts at trolling, bait and flame from both the religious and the atheists. Philosophy is always going to brush up against religion but it doesn't need to devolve into a contest of proving how smart you are by worn out meme's and paraphrasing (Hitchens/Dawkins/Fry) on the atheist side for a trolling attempt or something equally painful from the theists.

Which is again why it will need heavy moderation for a time to make sure it gets a sense of community and people who care for it, like the one here.

Arguments and disagreements are fine in my books the rest is 97% of the internet so I don't want more of it.

As long as you explain your reasoning solidly, you can post your Patreon link here. And as for the subject for this thread, if you're discussing about the site, that's fine too.

Thanks, well my reasoning is that this is a community of intelligent folks and a forum for tech and science. I think there maybe some cross over in interest for some folk for a philosophy forum (which this is not) and where better to look for people you want to have in your niche yet enjoyable community then the place where you enjoy the forum and mood.

:)

I don't expect much to go on on the start but if I can get a nice core small community then it will attract the right type of people.

So I plagiarized Qain for my forum and patreon rules;

So basically try be nice but definitely don't be a dick!

All patrons will be kept up to date on the creation of this project and the spending of their patronage. This is not a project for me to make money, it is a project for me to create what I am passionate about for all.

And the motto there is:

While I am looking for assistance with this project giving patronage does not exempt you from common decency rules of the community I will be creating. I would prefer to be poor and in good company then rich and in bad company.

The site will go up eventually with or with out patreon, it will just happen faster with it.
