Philips 40" 4K monitor BDM4065UC - a word of caution

..........as of now , I am reluctant to say. I even had my son do some coding yesterday, and he did not notice at all????? it was not the AMH (either of them).

Sometimes you're very cryptic and difficult to understand.

sorry, how so ??

edit 1 = I do not want misinterpretation and create false panic.
edit 2 = cryptic is ok, difficult to understand; please, I will correct.

Panic is good. Keeps you frosty. Keeps you alert. So you won't be surprised when the robot overlords take over.

you got me .....................argh....................
edit 1 = i am older, and do not require Prozac anymore......................lol
edit 2 = I did tech all my life, panic is a killer
edit 3 = what robot overlord WE ARE THE MASTER RACE WE CONTROL THE ROBOTS

So, I know you like panic.but.there is a limit. I redid the tests on 7680 x 2156, native x 2 eyefinity. I did not see again any of the 3 factors you indicated , to be present. Again, my testing methods are beginning to be more familiar to me. I hope this can help. The display is , again. very , very nice.............and I am a Game tourist, I deeply enjoy travelling in games worlds and appreciate the graphics. One of the reasons I went to 4K, and was caught off guard in the amazing graphic capacity of the upscaling of the monitors. (the good ones), was to get drastically beautifull displays.
In conclusion I do not think (IMO) that you have to worry; I sincerely beleive that the A409U, for the price, as was the A399U, is an incredible deal. Of course there will be always better....FOR A PRICE OF COURSE, and maybe not when you would like it. The price to fun; to capacity to pay, to not get killed by the wife or partner , and mainly be happy is not always the perfect model, on wich we appreciate very rarely the extra 300 to 400 we had to dish out more. (IMO)

I use the Philips 40" since June. Before i bought it, i was in a serious search rampage to be able to select the best monitor for my taste and usage. I almost went with a Benq BL3201PT, but it suddenly became much more expensive in my region, so i decided to go with the Philips. I read the detailed review posted on the tftcentral (best review on the web about this monitor IMHO), and i bought the Philips. I have to mention that where i live, buying the Philips with the current conditions is cheaper for me than ordering (and shipping) a Korean 40".

So, how is it... I read and watched all the stuff here, on youtube, everywhere and yes, there are some issues with it, even ones that noone mentioned - but that depends on the environment, i guess. What bothers me the most is the coil whining. I have built myself a silent PC (well it's not when i'm gaming, but thats another situation :P), so when idle-ing, i can hear it, when the music is off. It's annoying, but i have good ears and i live in a quiet neighborhood, so it's maybe not an issue for the majority of ppl. The other issue is the length of the dp1.2 cable, it's ridiculously short, so i had to look for a solution, it barely reached the PC. Furthermore, i'm not happy with the ghosting (it appears only on black stuff on white background, but still), but now we arrive to the issues that don't bother me that much, because the monitor is otherwise quite awesome.

I'm happy with the gaming and movie/series watching experience, response time is more than acceptable, the colors are good when calibrated (based on the tftcentral review, again), and when you fiddle with the settings, it behaves okay. The corners are a little bit shady, but not in a harmful way, and with the SmartUniformity mode on, the panel is quite homogenic. It's not totally, but it's good enough. I don't expect it to be perfect, for half the price of a smaller IPS 4k screen offered by other manufacturers...

I generally prefer VA to IPS (it's a matter of taste, i guess), so i'm basically happy with its performance, i must highlight the deep blacks and therefore the excellent contrast. In this size, at this pricepoint, for me, this was not the best, the only option. My previous monitor was a Dell 2408WFP, i used it for 7 years. I have no less expectations from this monitor, even though it truly has some minor and major issues. I don't mind the PWM, because i use it on 100% brightness, and in everyday usage it's fun to have. I also have to mention that i have not experienced any bleeding or color bar anomalies so far, so i think the quality of the panels may vary, and i got lucky.

Anyway, i think it's still good value for the money, if you are in a region where the Korean variants become more expensive for you.

I must correct myself, i have the same color bar bleeding as in the first comment. But that's the only case, when i get any bleeding, didn't notice more, i tried a lot of different scenarios (linked here and others too).

I bought this after watching the Tek Syndicate videos on the Korean 40 inches, and like halaloszto above I have issues with importing those monitors, but the Philips I could get delivered in 3 days. I bought it, and it arrived, and I was a tad worried about the colour bleeding that was mentioned above, but thankfully there wasnt that much on my monitor. I dont even notice it unless that stripe test is onscreen.

Granted, I'm upgrading from an LG 22MP55 which may as well be a CRT by comparison, so I was still super impressed by the Philips. All I use it for is watching videos on Youtube or Netflix, and playing video games. I don't do any editing nor depend on super high colour fidelity for anything. So I was more than satisfied with paying the $1200 (Australian) to upgrade to this.

One thing I did learn the hard way, setting up the old LG in portrait beside it sounded like a good idea, in practice the difference in picture quality is super noticeable and really jarring, and creates heaps of cursor lag on the Philips when using both displays. Although that is probably due to running the two different resolutions. So the second monitor is basically unusable for me anyway.

The biggest issue I have, is that there is hardly any 4K content around and YouTube's compression sucks.
