So I've set up a router using pfSense and I want to ad a wireless card but it seems I'm rather limited in my options... I would love a nice, dual band 900n PCIe card but nothing even close seems to be supported.
Is there any way I can acquire support for a card like this or am I just stuck with the lesser wireless?
Thanks guys!
Nope. Pfsense does not have drivers for modern WiFi cards. Maybe when 2.2 comes out it will work but until then there's nothing you can do. Pfsense really isn't made for WiFi.
The easiest thing to do is add a WiFi access point to the Lan side of the network.
Thanks for the reply Dexter.
Fortunately I've just been offered an cisco router and switch so my pfsense box has swiftly become obsolete for me lol. Hopefully a new version has better WiFi options, it is still fun to play around with.
You can still use the PFSense box on your network as a firewall. You can also use it as a VPN Serve as well. There is still a lot to do with PFSense like there is no tomorrow
Yeah, for me the advantage of pfsense is that it can handle a ton of connections, my old routers would always die if I tried to push them too hard. I also find the firewall really easy to configure while also having a lot of control over it. I use it to route and firewall between three networks and the internet which would be painful to do with consumer routers.
I think a lot of people get confused about the application of pfsense. It isn't made to replace consumer grade all-in-one type routers, which are also switches, access points, network storage, print servers, etc. It's made to be a semi enterprise level firewall router.
Just grab a wireless rougher and use it as an access point.
