pfSense box

This is my first post on here and really my first forum post in general and I'm not 100% certain if this is the correct place for this post. I am trying to make a pfSense router out of an old dell using the tutorial Logan posted. I was wondering if I could get some more in depth help setting it up because I really don't have a clue what i am doing. I am going to collage for computer science so i will probably learn everything I need to in time but atm as a freshman i don't really know much lol. Also I'm not sure how frequently the Tek Syndicate guys view these posts but I wanted to say thanks for all the time and effort you put into all of your videos. I mean you all are one of the reasons along with other people like Jay and Linus that really got me into computers in the first place although you all especially are what got me into Linux even though I don't know all that much about a lot of the great things you can do with it and computer science and wanting to learn to code and develop software.

also if someone has already posted something for this topic already that has been answered if you could direct me to that forum post that would be much appriciated

i've been wanting to tackle the same project. Do you already have network interface cards that you plan on installing already? If you do, I think you can start outlining your setup, that would help determine what exactly you're trying to do as far as making your own router.

i actually do not i have ordered one from amazon and it should get here in a few days but i was posting this ahead of time to get an idea of what i would be in store for but i want to set it up to run my local network inside my att router modem combo POS thing they give you and run the 3 Xclaim Xi-3 AP as well as my firewall and antivirus but i would also like to have it cache windows updates and websites like youtube, amazon and stuff like that i'm sure once i get the thing up and running i would like it to do more but thats what i would like it to do off the bat

but thank you for the documentation i will definitely look this over in the morning

Tek Syndicate did a video for pfsense about 3 years ago.

Here's a more recent link for Youtube and pfsense.

There are lots of others.

thanks Goeff

Following the Tek Syndicate video will get you started. pfSense hasn't changed all that much sense they made the video. You'll have to do a little more research when you try to had port forwarding but it's still not difficult. I've been playing with pfSense and OPNSense for a few weeks now and I've gotten both setup and functioning with my FreeNAS box using NAT and firewall rules. I'm experimenting with Sophos UTM now but it's being a little more difficult to get setup.

I didn't think it had changed much but another thing I was wondering if I can use it to block Microsoft's domain like Logan had talked about in the episode of the tek
