Person of Interest has an Interest in our world

So I have recently picked up Person of Interest as it has come on Netflix. Man oh man does it portray/parallel our world today. It is meant to clearly. However, the good that comes from it (only on second season) is legit. If there were an AI that monitors all forms of tech, what would be the problem? I honestly dont think privacy issues like SOPA are really a threat anymore? Even the NSA, in a society where crime is evolving with the times, policing has to as well. The issue is not really the concern of spying, but that the people doing it aren't regulated. If everyone were able to spy on one another in a sense, then you could know who murdered who and innocent people wouldn't be victimized (imprisoned, killed, what ever).

Now on this note, do you think we are moving to a mass consciousness of sorts? It is possible we are already AI and just don't fully accept/realize it. If string theory is correct or if the idea of everything existing as waves (some science suggests exists as waves). What I mean by mass consciousness refers to much of the New Age cultural movement. Indigo people...

I know I went from technology to us being the technology and essentially we are recreating said technology through our evolution. Anyways, this all ties together, essentially meaning if everyone spied it would be a non issue. I mean privacy is good and all, but privacy breeds more privacy like any other thing. Murders have to remain private if they want to remain innocent in the eyes of others, same for thieves and for any other thing you might consider bad.

I dont think we should really fear AI, because it could very well lead to the understanding of ourselves alot more.

No thanks I dislike people way way too much to want that.

Also I don't care for anyone knowing what I am doing. It is ok to be alone.

Keep watching, and listen to what the character Harold is saying, you'll realise what the show is trying to tell you (at least in regards to privacy), privacy is vitally important! You'll also notice as the show goes on that crime doesnt stop some of it just evolves. And machines just like humans are ultimately abused by whos who are in control over it

Though I personally believe a true AI is years off, I also find them fascinating. But, to fear an AI... that's something I've heard in a variety of settings including fiction and I do believe Stephen Hawking made mention of it... or maybe that was aliens. In Lagercrantrz's addition to Larsson's trilogy Blomkvist is told "...how do you think a computer would feel when it wakes up to find itself captured and controlled by primitive little creatures like us. Why would it put up with that? ...... it's fatally easy to make anthropomorphic mistakes: to ascribe human characteristics to machines and misunderstand what drives them inherently..."
Can god create something smarter than himself?
Anyway. I do love the "issues" surrounding the whole concept of AI and then the moral questions ala Blade Runner for instance.
For privacy... we're in a world where fear (FUD if you will) is being used to justify setting up systems both locate and monitor individuals on scales unknown except in Orwellian nightmares. Facial recognition, cameras on every corner, in every room, and more and more activated without the user's knowledge on their laptops and desks. This is not going to stop and in fact its merged into data mining both corporate and governmental. Both are going to install the hardware no matter what so the battle is in the value placed on an individual's rights. And I for one, believe this battle must be waged daily and by every human with a pulse; we can't just let things slide out of our grasp. As we're seeing here in the usa there has been a rapid and forceful movement growing which has successfully started pushing the country backwards towards the 1930s. And with the work, blood, and lives it cost to get to where we are, we cannot afford even a single step backward.
Privacy is also business and a favoured top here at Tek... there's money in them thar data dumps and as long as companies are allowed to mine and use... our privacy is lessened. This is even looking worse with the new Winderz 10 License agreement.
oh well, I have rambled and will now stfu.
Anyway, nice questions and comments.

I am gonna tell you this then, for every criminal in jail you pay taxes to feed and shelter them. Hell you pay to educate them. Now how many of these criminals are innocent? A large number, how many are being freed with new evidence, some, not alot..... Privacy would be a non concern for you when your falsely accused for a crime because the evidence points to you. If we had a computer that simulated everything accurately then we wouldn't have the need to falsely imprison people. Yes it might be corrupted like minority report's premise, but the thing is it has always been corrupted.

Hesitating about privacy concerns and AI fears, is fine and all, but it isn't fine when it allows slave labor to happen (more slaves today than any other time throughout history combined), people at the top to control much of everything, they will develop it and abuse it if it isn't publicly controlled. Now having said that, privacy wont exist in the future, it already has issues, but the thing is that is a small amount of people who are spying. If it is public and not controlled by secrecy to find out peoples secrets, then yes it is abused. But if it isn't kept secret like it should have been in Person of Interest, it wouldn't have been abused. I know because we as people wouldn't allow for its abuse, it can only be abused when small amounts of people have it. If everyone abuses it, it really isn't abusing because of the following example.

Lets say someone wants to kill someone, they can find where they are easily, but at the same time this would be seen and stopped before the other person bites the dust. Privacy has existed mainly because we are afraid of who is in charge. We should be in charge or atleast take charge in todays world. I mean science remained private for centuries after the church took power. Today we don't have to worry about freedom of speech as. If you are being surveyed that doesnt mean your freedoms are taken away in any bit. There is likely no god to give people proper justice except for ourselves. If you dont have this then plenty of people can get away and plenty of innocent people dont. So have your privacy, accept murder/rape/muggings/ etc.

The reason why person of interest is such a bad example or maybe good is that an AI that is very intelligent was given to a secret branch of the federal government. If it were used by everyone, police, us, other countries, we would be closer together than ever before. The bible is just a preparation of sorts for this future. So is all other religion, talking about divine beings. We become more and more divine as time passes. What I mean by divine is understanding what is available to be understood. This is the path that has clearly been laid out for us and some of us will be hesitant, but when haven't any relating to science been hesitant?

An easier solution to fixing the prision population problem is to end the drug war, not to create some omniscient AI that we hope won't screw things up.

Most people just like to be left alone. Have all information on a person means you can control them. There isn't a single person who hasn't done something dumb or regretted. The entirety of a person's has no reason to be displayed for all to see.

You are an AI and as am I. Yes the drug war is a bad thing, but the truth is drug abuse increases crime. So you tell me increase in murder? muggings? break ins? You tell me how that isn't a problem contributed to drugs? I am not saying it is all drug related, but being/knowing former drug addicts, I know that drugs are an issue. Marijuana not necessarily, but heroin, coke abuse are all things middle schools take now a days (some can). The issue isnt the abuser but the distributor.

Having said all that I am going back to you and I are AI, we don't know anything about our past and can never do so truly. It is all pure speculation, as the history is written by the winner. So what I am saying is an AI/program can and should simulate it. What the fuck are physicists doing with the Large Hadron Collider? They are trying to simulate the beginning of the universe, the next logical step for them to do is make many simulated models via computer. It can't ever be proven without quantum computing, in the sense that what will be capable with it is beyond what we can comprehend today. We do have theories but the thing is science is meant to understand. We wont understand ourselves without understanding how to recreate ourselves artificially (atleast that is my opinion). Chances are we are going to continue a cycle which will lead to what one might consider heaven. Hell existing in heaven, just being rightfully punished prisoners and not unjustly.

You still didnt answer my question why should I trust any sentient entity human or otherwise? I don' have social media because I don't have any desire to even have my family know what I am up to all the time.

On the drug side if we focused on treatment over punishment it would massively reduce drug users and reduce all the normal crime associated with the drug trade.

You are correct on both fronts about my not answering you and about the drug side. The thing is though, Narcos like Pablo Escobar exist(ed). They made so much on ruling by fear leading to his privacy (or not so much). But what I am trying to get at is that the war on drugs needs to exist for people like Pablo.

Back to answering your question about AI. Since religion was created we have always believed we would be judged properly in death. Chances are we will or we wont. It is a toss up. But the sure thing is that we exist in this reality and know what can be done in it (to an extant). What we don't know is that we possibly already in a simulation, which means we are being watched and do we know who it is? For all you know we are giving fucking secrets to North Korea.

Here is something straight to the point. What happens if North Korea actually creates this? They would know all of our secrets, personal and not so personal (state secrets, etc). So to tell you, it is the same argument about creating the atom bomb. It was necessary to create it because the Germans and Japanese were both working on their own ones. If germany developed it before the manhattan project did, you would be living in a Nazi controlled universe. It is the same thing about AI. It isnt a matter of ethics, its a matter of who is going to use it first and abuse it first. If it were public knowledge, a global community project, then we wouldn't have an arms race like we usually do. This is one of the final pieces to understanding the universe. It may be abused, but do you want to live in a North Korean quantum computer universe? Fuck no.

Privacy shouldn't bne a concern. You would care if you got busted for killing someone, but wouldn't care nearly as much as getting caught watching animal porn or other disturbing things. It might be embarrasing to be known for animal porn, but do you want people to get away with murder? rape? Science has been good at helping (more recently) but it can only go so far before someone wants to create sentient AI. It is better its globally reviewed than say North Korea or some other group that is suspected in being malevolent.

For nearly 99% of my remembered life, privacy was always a concern for me. It wasn't until this month really that I pulled a uturn.

This opened my eyes quite a bit. It can be a bit out there, but the content discussed is an eye opener, atleast for me. I mean it talks about what the universe may be working towards, in other words our understanding will go so far from what we started from. Some of Quantum physics says everything acts like a wave, which suggests we are evolving to be the consciousness of the universe. The question is are we fine with true criminals having the same freedoms even after they commit a crime? I don't mean petty crimes, I mean intent to murder or rape, holding hostages at gun point, those things. Car bombings and other things. The war on terror literally could come to a close in a matter of days if this system were implemented. Yes there is a huge philosophical argument against this however this is the case for everything....
