PCIe Gen 4 Storage AOC in Gen 5 slot

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone tried using a Gen 4 Storage AOC in a Gen 5 slot?

Thinking of using a card like the AOC-SLG4-4E4T (PCIe x16 to 2x SlimSAS x8) in a motherboard with a Gen 5 slot (eg X13 Supermicro boards) connecting to Gen 4 NVMe drives.

Thanks in advance.

Shouldn’t be a problem. PCIe downgrades the generation automatically. If there is a problem, you can always change the BIOS to manually set PCIe4,3 or whatever. No one actually uses PCIe 5.0 hardware in their PCIe 5.0 slots atm

The card cannot use more lanes that electrically offered by the mobo slot.

No, a 16-lane PCIe 4.0 card will not work at full speed in an 8 lane PCIe 5.0 slot.

That’s another common question on this topic.

Yep understood. Was planning to use it in a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot (on a Supermicro X13SEI-TF). Since it requires bifurcation, was just wondering if they will play nicely. Would’ve gone for the X13SEM-TF but at the moment MCIO to U.2 cables are impossible to get hold of.

I just bought (and received) two of these:

PCIe Gen4 Mini Cool Edge IO 38pin to U.2 (SFF-8639) Cable 50 CM

Haven’t managed to get the Tyan motherboard (S8050G4ME-2T) to recognize the Intel P4510 attached to it yet though…
