PCIe 3x8 in 4x4 Slot

Quick question that I have been scratching my head with. Can I put the Synology E10M20-T1 PCIe Gen3x8 card in my Gen4x4 slot and retain full functionality? I know that they have the same bandwidth, but I am not sure with fewer pins making contact if that still works.

Cheers

Not likely - definitely. The card is put into a slot that’s electrically wired for 4 lanes and will only be able to communicate at the lowest common denominator speed of slot and card (gen 3).

Irrelevant in a Gen 4x4 slot.

You shouldn’t need to bifurcate to have access to the NIC and the NVME portion of the card because there a PLX chip on the board that will take care of communication to both devices.

Jode is right that you will definitely loose half of the card’s potential bandwidth because it will operate at Gen3x4 in the Gen4x4 slot

I misunderstood the OP. You’re right. I thought he was saying it was a 4x4 bifurcated slot, not gen4, x4 slot. poor reading comprehension on my part

That was my first take as well. Unfortunately, there are many shortcut terminologies to describe PCIe connectivity.
Bifurcation meddled into it can make things quite confusing.

So the answer is, yes you can run an x8 gen3 card in an x4 gen4 slot, but you will run it at limited capacity.

Those limitations may or may not matter for your specific use case.

as per the original question : You can put a pcie 2 x16 into any pci-e slot. but a pci-e 5.0 or 6.0 x1 … will never see the … other pin connections. so you end up running a pci-e 2x16 at x4 , because only the 4x pin are : connected. the speed of the bus don’t matter. the card will be limited.
