Hi,
I have a decent gaming pc, but I was wanting to upgrade it some to make it faster. Here are my current PC specs: Core 2 Quad Q9550
Intel Motherboard
8gb ram (slow, 1366 or something)
Radeon 6950 1gb
120gb Mushkin SSD and 140gb Raptor HDD
Antec 900 Case
800w Power Supply
2 Optical Drives
I want to upgrade for a few reasons: I don't like the Antec 900's cable management very well, the power supply i have has a lage wattage however it is not 80 plus certified and I would especially like that as well as short cables, and faster gaming (CPU is a little dated and want a little more kick than the 6950).
That being said, here is my proposed build:
Intel i5 3570k
MSI gtx 670 power edition (680 if the price is right)
16gb ram (preferably1866 speed if budget allows)
Fractal Design Define R4
750w Power Supply (I have in mind either a Corsair or XFX)
ASRock z77 extreme4 motherboard
NZXT Havik 140
My budget is around $1000-1200. I plan to re-use my hard drives and optical drives and steal a fan or two from the Antec 900 if needed.
I especially plan to play Skyrim with enhancement mods which I hear takes a beefy graphics card. Other games include Batman Arkham City, Portal 1 and 2, Oblivion with mods, and possibly Fallout.
Does my build make sense? Is it overkill? Underkill? I mainly want smooth performance (60fps maxed out in games).
Could you give us the model number of your motherboard and CPU? I could not find it on the Newegg site. A lot depends on the motherboard and CPU socket in order to give some better input towards your needs. Thanks and I will reply once we get a little more info.
Sorry if I wasn't specific enough.
I currently have: an Intel dx48bt2 motherboard and an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550. lga socket 775 (These might be hard to find since they are a little dated).
What is on my list: is an Intel Core i5 3570k processor and an ASRock z77 extreme4 motherboard. lga socket 1155.
And no...I don't think the processor is on Newegg. The motherboard is however on Newegg and is called "Intel BOXDX48BT2 LGA 775 Intel X48 Intel Motherboard".
You can save money by reusing your video card. It's still a pretty good performer in today's games.
For PSU maybe an NZXT Hale 90 750w 80+ Gold or XFX Proseries 750 XXX Edition 80+ Silver.
I believe the NZXT is a Superflower and the XFX is a Seasonic.
Your build makes sense and everything looks pretty good! I'm just trying to save you some money with minimal performance sacrifice. Radeon 8000 series is due out first half of 2013 and Geforce 700 series to follow soon after so it kind of makes sense to me but if you REALLY want the 670/680 now then that's also fine.
I was looking for more info on your motherboard to see if there was anything that could be done with it. Intel does not even offer support for that model anymore. Sinful when you consider it is only a 2008 motherboard. The rest of the items look good for a build and really the only thing is the RAM which perhaps this would work for your build.

Hope all works out well with your build.
Ok. Thanks! I might just wait a little while longer and see how prices are then as well as the upcoming series' of graphics cards.
Would only upgrading the CPU (i would need a new motherboard as well) change the performance that much?
